I loved both but they were very different. Sardinia is much more rural. You can go for walks, to the beach, etc although you should be aware that at this time of year you are not guaranteed wonderful weather. I don't think you could go swimming for example. We went just before Easter and had a mix of sunny and rainy days. It was out of season so most places were closed and deserted, which didn't bother us but I can imagine it would not be anyone's cup of tea.
Malta is very different- it's much more built up and there is more sightseeing to do so regardless of the weather, you should find some things to do. Malta is also much smaller so you can easily visit the whole country in a week. Sardinia is much bigger so realistically you will probably stick to the one area of the island. Hope this helps a little...

Oh and there is a good bus network in Malta so you can reach most places without needing a car, which isn't the case in Sardinia.

MegCleary · 17/01/2018 20:31

That’s really helpful thank you

I've been to Malta and really liked it. There's a good mix of things to do. Valetta is the European city of culture this year, which would be a good reason to go if you want there to be lots going on.

You can also get the ferry over to Gozo so it's worth spending time there too. But I've just watched the Hairy Bikers Sardinia Episode and that looked really nice too.

You could flip a coin and go to one this year and one next. Or see which has the easiest/cheapest flights.

Have family in Malta so we visit frequently - one thing to say is that it's SO cheap! Things like coffee, ice cream, meals out etc - very reasonable. Hubby and I - 2 coffees and an icecream between us in a beach side outdoor cafe - change from 5 Euro! Unbelievable!

Sorry OP, I thought this was a baby name thread and I was about to get stuck into another great long discussion! They always amuse me hugely!

scrivette · 18/01/2018 21:04

I also thought it was a name thread at first Blush

However, I have been to Malta and I love it, but haven't been to Sardinia.

Malta is full of history and plenty to do, it doesn't have many sandy beaches though so it depends on the type of holiday that you are after.

MegCleary · 18/01/2018 22:34

Really helpful as always, many thanks.

Haha I read this under baby names. I was thinking "please don't name your baby Sardinia..."
Sorry, no help with your query.

I visited Malta in November, it was great. Lots to see, great bus service (you can get a bus pass that lasts a week and costs just 21 euros, we used it throughout and saved a fortune).
Hotels of a decent standard, eveyone speaks very, very good English and the food was very nice.
The airport was modern and well organised and a huge improvement on the two Greek airports (Rhodes and Kos) I passed through last year also.
Negatives, it's very populated, meaning that the roads are very busy and some areas are somewhat scruffy.
We also got the ferry to Gozo for the day and could also use our bus ticket their - The Citadel in Victoria (caught the bus easily outside the ferry port) was fabulous.
Oh, and it's cheaper in Malta than Sardinia.
Our best day out was a Game of Thrones tour, DH loved it.
I used to write holiday brochures (Malta included) for a living and also visited Malta with two large groups of travel agents for visits which meant visiting a lot of hotels so if you want any feedback on any specific hotels/resorts you have in mind, please feel free to ask.

MegCleary · 19/01/2018 21:31

@maddiemookins16mum wow thanks to you also for that post. I might burst with questions!!! We have found an Airbnb I am tempted by in Mellieha is that an ok area? Also struggling with flights the nearest to us land at 9 at night and I would love earlier so not wasting a day.
If there was a hotel you really recommend. Our daughters are 10 and 7 and we just want a place with a decent pool and with some good restaurants within walking distance for a meal in the evenings.

Mellieha has two parts, the bay area and the town. The town is atop a hill (lovely views etc). The bay area is, well, on the sea front - nice bit of sandy beach (and the very popular Popeyes Village is 5 minutes drive from the resort - nice day out for your girls). I stayed at the Seabank hotel facing the Bay. You're only 15 mins drive from the ferry port to Gozo. Distance from airport about 50 minutes.

MegCleary · 19/01/2018 22:19

How was the Seabank?

Very nice, but busy. The best thing was the room set up. You went in, small corridor and usual bathroom but then there was a sleeping area with two single beds (and TV) and then a sliding door (which you can shut over) beyond which was another bedroom with double bed, TV and balcony. Perfect for families.
Good buffet, a choice of other restaurants and lovely pool area (plus kids entertainment - we were there in June though).

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/01/2018 06:47

I've been to the Mehllia (sp?) Bay area. Seems nice. It has one of the few sandy beaches on Malta, a nice safe swimming area (separate to the beach) and some nice bars and restaurants.

There was also a mystery small museum which was never open when we were there (we were scuba diving from a company there.

Tunnara Museum so history of the building and tuna farming in the area - there are big tuna nets some way off shore and you could go and dive in/near them but we didn't.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. That's how I end up in Malta. I had decided to go there to refresh my English and take a closer look at the place and me literary fall in love with the place with it culture people climate and thousands of other reasons. I would recommend you to follow my steps and go to this school www.ihmalta.com/en/. It's in Swieqi. If you happen to be nearby text me in PM I'll show you the place.
Wish you luck and joy of determination:)

Go to Malta and get straight on the bus to Cirkewwa and catch the ferry to Gozo!! Lovely island - lovely restaurants and beaches/coves and walks - the island is in full bloom around that time. Malta is great for a couple of day trips but gozo is far nicer and easy to get to comino and blue lagoon.
