Lille

Hi, has anyone been to Lille with kids and would they recommend. I'm thinking of going on the Eurostar as it only takes an hour and a half, we would stay overnight and then come home in the evening the next day so don't want to spend too much of that time travelling. Is it a nice place or should I skip it and for the extra hour on the Eurostar head into Paris? Looking at the August Bank holiday weekend to go. TIA

It's nice. A pretty town centre with nice shops iirc.

I went there for a day about 18 yrs ago. It was a few hours in the town followed by a trip to the hypermarket - I love France so I thought it was great. Somewhere else I'd love to go to is Dijon, or anywhere in France really. Sorry I can't really help.

Have a go ogle. there's a museum of modern arts, a zoo, amusement park...
It looks great.

Free zoo and nice park to wander around, good shops. It's one of my favourite little stop offs!

Are the DCs learning French? A few words would probably go down well, Please, Thank you etc.
One thing about France is that the eating places tend not to be open at lunchtime.

Thanks all, yes I have Googled and seen the zoo, but also wanted some recommendations from people who have been as I've never been to France! which is silly as we are so close. Sounds like enough to keep us going for 2 days and just having a wander. My eldest dd took German gcse and my middle child knows a few french basics. A picnic for lunchtime maybe?

Oui to the pique-nique! The French have boulangeries and patisseries that do wonderful stuff.
When DP and I went to France we took euros and spent that apart from on booze and it meant we stayed on budget.

I found an old thread on Lille with links on things to do and there is a Natural History Museum. So with the museum, free zoo and park plus general wandering around (and lots of eating) and shopping, there seems plenty to keep us going for 2 days. It looks pretty from what I can see.

Restaurant recommendations or hotel or B and B places would be most welcome, plus any other tips, even Eurostar tips as have never been on it. I'm going on my own with 2 of my dds they are aged 16 and 10 and are good travellers, we are leaving my youngest dd ( she will be 3 by then) with Dp, to give some quality time to my eldest two, so I do want to be armed with knowledge and prepared
