Insurance - depression

ghastlyornot · 14/01/2018 17:00

Had a period of depression last year, on medication. Thankfully I've weaned myself off and feel ok.

Now getting quotes for travel insurance and they are so high.

Two weeks worldwide. One with previous depression, one with very mild asthma.

Don't want to not declare, because I know if anything happened then the previous depression would be the cause.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

I had this. Not sky-high but declined to quote at all, for mild anxiety, treated by CBT not ADs. I phoned the insurer and went through the screening again and got cover but it excluded the anxiety (so if I'd had a panic attack and missed a flight for example there would have been no cover). Next time I'm going to try one of the ones that specialise in pre-existing conditions including mental health. Boots was recommended to me by a friend.

Yay! Who did you go with? I've decided to get us all annual cover as it is done once and then only updated when something changes. We have a raft of conditions between us and it is really hard trying to remember it all every time.

Top dog insurance are not a lot extra.

Oops, went with Boots. Only usually one holiday so annual seems a waste.

Insure and Go are the best if you have medical conditions. My DH has used them for years.

Usually use Insure and Go but last quote was very expensive.

For some reason insurers think you're a higher risk when you've been diagnosed with a condition and are being or have been treated for it than someone who may have the same condition but not been diagnosed. Surely the latter are a higher risk than those who are being treated?

i dont think you have to declare previous depression. Its not an illness that youre going to even possibly have to claim for surely

AttilaTheMeerkat · 18/01/2018 17:04

It’s very important to declare depression when you buy travel insurance so that you are properly covered in the event that you need to cancel your holiday due to illness, or you require medical treatment whilst you are on holiday.
