I'm going to be 40 and have never been abroad with my oh or my parents.

So for my big birthday I want to go away and have a 'nice' weekend away with a few girl friends. Ideally beach or spa but not sure what the weather is like or where to go in the first weekend of May ? Any suggestions... open to anything but it would be good to do something more adult ish / exciting as we all have children and so out holidays abroad all revolve around beaches and pools for the kids.

Also want to keep costs reasonable if possible

Not beachy but, Reykjavik was great when I went for my 40th. If you’re looking coastal with things to do, maybe Sicily, Lisbon or the Venetian or French Riviera?

barcelona. it has a beach but also the city and the bars and restaurants. weather should be reasonable then...maybe not boiling hot. easy and cheap to fly from most uk airports. nice bit of history/gardens/city/galeries to wander round when you are bored of beach and bars

Malaga might be cheaper than Barcelona, if you're on a budget. You can get a train from the airport to the city for a couple of euros. Plenty to see and do there, plus a beach and harbour. Maybe a tapas and wine tour for entertainment?

I second Malaga. Barcelona didn't feel as welcoming.

Thirding Malaga or other Andalucian cities. I think you can fly direct to Granada with Easyjet now.

The weather may be beach weather or hotter. We went on an Andalucian tour (mountains, Seville, Granada, Cordoba and Malaga city) a couple of years ago and it was far too hot for sightseeing, but it was unseasonally hot that year - basically August weather in May - one of the street signs said 46C.

We spent a lot of time sitting in parks under trees and paying very close interest in the fountains where the water splashed around a bit.
