Some friends are visiting the UK and are planning a day driving around the Cotswolds. They will have to start and finish in N London. Has anyone got any recommendations for a route? As 'English ' as possible, villages, chocolate box cottages, IFYKWIM.

Broadway, Upper and Lower Slaughters are always popular especially with Amerian/Japanese visitors. At the western end of the Cotswolds though (towards Evesham/Cheltenham) so may be too far for a day trip.

I'd suggest some of the southern Cotswold towns & villages - usually less busy with tourists & easy to get to, but still v pretty.

How about starting at Tetbury (Prince Charles' local town, v pretty, lots of antiquey places etc). Then head to Minchinghampton (NT common & v pretty village), lots of pretty villages too to detour around if desired; then on to Painswick - lovely & surrounded by beautiful deep valleys & lots more pretty villages!

Apart from Tetbury, it's not so touristy as the Oxon Cotswolds - Personally, I think it's much more beautiful - a bit wilder really.

Aslo Bibury, Bourtron on the Water and Stow on the Wold are worth seeing.

A day trip from N london..
M40 to Oxford, Woodstock, Bleinheim Palace. Then onto Burford for an afternoon stroll and dinner at the excellent Lamb.
