Car hire Iceland - February

Going to Iceland in Feb, and need to arrange car hire. I've read differing opinions on whether it's advisable to get a 4 wheel drive or not? We're staying in the South, pretty much on the Golden Circle from what I can see. Not planning on doing any massive drives off the main roads, but obviously want to be safe on the roads. Any input would be welcome!

If you are on FB look up the Guide to Iceland page. There is something on there today about car hire.

We had a front wheel drive when we went in March. The roads are well maintained so there was no snow or ice to really worry about.

Some information here the weather can change in an instant and it can be dangerous. Make sure you have full insurance to get you back to Reykjavik if you are unlucky enough to have problems.

We went in February and were glad of the four wheel drive when we did Pingvellar and Golden circle.

As said above the weather can change quickly. When we went in early April we had a 4 wheel drive which was great to do the golden circle. The dc were higher up and had good views from the windows. At the time we went fuel prices were comparable to here so we didn’t find that an issue.

I’ve been twice in February. The first time we went the weather was very mild and we would have been fine without the 4x4. The second time there was really poor weather and we drove past quite a few stranded cars just on the road between Reykjavik and Selfoss one evening. Getting into Thingvellir without a 4x4 was impossible during our second visit.

I've read about people's car doors being blown off, luckily that didn't happen to us. Iceland really is wild and amazing.

We had a 4x4in feb. We went right round the island and it was amazing but quite a few blizzards and def needed 4x4. We met people in hofn who had a bad accident with a small car.

Iceland is amazing. Would def get a 4x4 tho.

Ooh, thanks all. I hadn't checked back on the thread for a while, and was convincing myself a small car would be fine. Will look again. Do I need sand and ash insurance too?
