Eurocamp as single mum and sans car, advice please!

I am trying to plan a Eurocamp-style holiday for me and my son who will be 4 by the summertime. We are living in Northern Ireland so that excludes a few routes by virtue of there being no direct flight to a few regions where there are parks. Eg there are no direct flights to Venice, Rome, Florence Beziers, Perpignan, Carcasonne or Biarritz. I will not be driving so need somewhere that isn't too far from the airport. We'll be taxi-ing it to and from the airport, I loathe any sort of schlep with luggage when arriving or just departing. Also somewhere with a supermarket that isn't an astronomical taxi fare away or that is on site and reasonable. I'm also on a budget. This will be our second holiday of the year and I've gone super comfortable for the first one as I am apprehensive about travelling alone with my son but hope I'll have gotten over that by the time of the Eurocamp trip. the reason I want to try Eurocamp trip is that will be closer to our true price point for future years. Also need reliable weather so not northern France or Holland. So those criteria are:
Reliably good weather in July (not northern France or Holland)
Accessible by a direct flight from Belfast - which means a park close to any of these airports is okay: (France) Toulouse, Chambery, Bergerac, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Nice; (Spain) Reus, Girona, Barcelona; Italy (Milan, Verona)
Park not too far from airport - (will be taking a taxi/private transfer for to/from airport journeys - 50/60 euro fine, 100 not)
Not miles away from supermarket (5-10 km is fine)
Good amenities on site (given the no car situ)
Not a No-frills site, Ile de Re was described like that.
Any help would be really appreciated due to the solo parent, car-less, plus young person nexus

I think it's pretty unworkable without a car to be honest and it would be cheaper and easier all round to just book a cheap hotel package somewhere where you can access everything on foot. Eurocamp type holidays are great but only the biggest sites will give you all you need for a week or two without having to leave by car to find a decent supermarket or access other amenities. And getting to most of them from the airport or rail station will b very expensive and/or time consuming with no car.

It's not totally impossible but it's probably much more trouble and expense than it's worth, compared to alternatives.

Also anywhere with reliable weather is going to be very expensive in July, even for the smallest/oldest caravans (which you will fry in) or a tent. They are designed for families of up to six so for one adult and one child it's not a cost effective option at all compared to a cheap hotel room.

Have you thought about Airbnb? My mum is in NI and reckons Easyjet/Ryanair and Airbnb is the way to go (she usually goes to Southern Spain). I wouldn't consider Eurocamp with no car.

alltheworld · 12/01/2018 04:38

In terms of cost are you able to go outside school holidays?

SandLand · 12/01/2018 04:44

Eurocamp in a static is perfectly possible by plane. Weve done it ourselves, both as a family if 4, and the following year i took the boys on my own as DH just started a new job, and couldnt get leave for the week we had booked.

Can't advise on sites, as we've used 2 airports you say you can't get to.

Have you also looked at canvas and yelloh? They often share venues with eurocamp, and may have some parks in different places - or a better search parameters for flying from specific airports!

Hi I would choose Nice for the Airport. Antibes is very near for taxi purposes and there are campsites there. Also a train runs along the coast so if you want to go off site you can easily visit Cannes, Nice, Monaco etc. We have always stayed on sites nearer Frejus around there but is a bit further re the taxi.
Antibes is on the coast but have not visited the beach there but town looked nice.

We love campsites we like the relaxed atmosphere and outdoor life for a couple of weeks for the children!

We haunt been but I think it looks brilliant we have just got the brochure have you got it ? As it tells you on each park if a car needed or not and how far it is from the airport. I would ring them and speak to them about what you need and get some advice from them on where would suit you best.

WhereIsBlueRabbit · 12/01/2018 06:22

We are looking into this, though there are two adults in our case, but similar situation in terms of no car. I take it you've tried filtering on the Eurocamp website for sites within easy reach of airports?

I got very nostalgic seeing two sites that I visited as a teen come up: Camping Cala Gogo on the Costa Brava and Camping Ca Savio near Venice. Both big sites with pools and next to beaches, lots of facilities.

If you search the Eurocamp threads on here, there's some helpful advice.

www.tiliguerta.com in Sardinia

Not direct but easy journey and reasonable cost flights. I am also a SP with one ds9
We went here last year - and it was fantastic - beautiful as well - would go back if possible-

Went to camping fabulous in Rome as well Year before and that was good fun everything on site but we both preferred Sardinia.and wouldn't go back if we had other options - also cheaper than. Sardinia

I also find it cheaper to book direct with campsite - but read euro camp info as a guide.

Vilanova Park near Barcelona is fine without a car and has everything you are looking for. It may be cheaper to book directly through the site rather than Eurocamp.
Airbnb isn’t really comparable to Eurocamp, but as a pp said Eurocamp accommodation tends to be more cost effective for bigger families so a package to a hotel or apartment with a nice pool and splash park may be easier for the same price. Jet2 has lots of free child place offers at the moment.

GlitterGlue · 12/01/2018 18:41

Eurocamp helpfully has a guide to parks that work well car free. www.eurocamp.co.uk/travel-and-extras/travelling-by-plane/car-free-holidays

However, as has been said above, it may be cheaper to book an apartment or hotel. Unless you really want the site facilities?

mirmc · 12/01/2018 20:40

Have a look at Castell Montgri, but with Lifestyle Holidays, cheaper than Eurocamp. 40 minutes from Girona airport. There is a direct bus to the campsite. They run a free bus to the beach/ town or you can walk in about 15 minutes. A Lidl and a Spanish supermarket nearby too. July is peak season in Europe though. Great value in June. If your son hasn't started school could you go then?

Thanks everyone. The search function doesn’t work very well for me within mumsnet so I couldn’t locate this post after I’d put it up. We went to Frejus in the end and had a wonderful time. A belated thank you for the advice!
