City break-possibly Germany

End of March for just a couple nights or up to a week. We've been to Prague, Budapest, Croatia, Krakow, Barcelona, Amsterdam and a few others.
We would like a pretty old town to wander around, nice restaurants to explore in the evening. Good and drink not too expensive so ruled out Scandinavian countries.
Thoughts? Berlin, Munich, other German cities? Or Bulgaria was another option? Thanks.

Ooh, I was also thinking Bologna, v nice, went there for part of our honeymoon. Very, very nice for food.

Cross posted with you about Valencia.

I was just in Nuremberg once, briefly, when I was much younger, so take this with a grain of salt... So much of Nuremberg was destroyed in the war, that it didn't really have the feeling of a beautiful old city to me. It is cleverly rebuilt, but medieval rebuilt is not the same as medieval...

I loved Berlin. History in my lifetime as it were. We had a free tour guide Sandermans I think they were called and we bought a 73 hour travel pass to go on all the trains from the airport to central Berlin and the u-barn.
I also loved Munich too.

tinytemper66 · 07/01/2018 13:44

We also drove to Cologne. I loved that too!

Heidelberg is lovely. Nearest airport is Frankfurt.

Sillybilly1234 · 07/01/2018 14:09

Bruges is fantastic.

clara I was in Nuremberg last April and it very much felt like an old city, are you sure you aren’t thinking of Koln or somewhere?
We even visited the Medieval dungeons and Castle. There were some new bits but the centre and the area around the river was lovely

Salzburg?

AnnaMagnani · 07/01/2018 15:15

Salzburg is gorgeous and would definitely meet the wandering around, lovely restaurants idea. March is a good time as later in the year the prices will be £££ for the festivals.

Another curveball: Ljubljana (Slovenia) is fabulous.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/01/2018 16:34

Trier is very nice. Very pretty area.

n0ne · 07/01/2018 18:39

Yes, Heidelberg is stunning, and Ghent is arguably as pretty as Bruges but much livelier.

Archfarchnad · 07/01/2018 19:00

I live in Berlin. The one thing we don't do here is 'pretty old town'. At least not since 1945.

Munich sounds about right for what you want. Or Prague.

Archfarchnad · 07/01/2018 19:01

Ah, you've been to Prague, just seen that.

And Munich isn't terribly cheap (unlike Berlin).
I'd recommend Ljubljana.
