We are flying London to Bangkok, family of 4, wondering if the extra ££££ to upgrade to premium economy worth it? Biggest person is dh who is 5'8. Its with Eva Air, thanks.

I did it for a night flight back from Tanzania. It was well worth it as I normally cannot sleep on night flights at all. I managed about 5 or 6 hours sleep in premium.

Virgin PE is excellent, IME. I pay for it for any flights over 7hrs.

Never used Eva Air.

If you can afford then go for it. I would always fly PE on long haul.

If it’s £1200 for 4 of you return, that’s about £15 per person per hour. If you can afford it, I’d do it, but not if it meant missing out on something else material. I’ve doen PE on virgin and BA and it is nicer, but not usually worth the premium.

HeadDreamer that's with Thomas Cook. In Thomas Cook economy you have to pay for head phones, you get the basic screen package but have to pay to upgrade for extra/more up to date movies, charges for drinks etc.

There were four of us, two under 10, so I think PE is was worth the extra money of £300 each.

We live in Australia and go back to Europe every six month. After trying the Premium Economy on a set of trip, first with British Airways then Cathay, we now rather prefer to flight in economy because we manage to sleep MORE than in PE. This is because the arm rest between seats cannot be moved and so we find it easier to sleep lying the head either on the lap or table of the person (still family) sitting next to you.
In PE you have a foot rest which is nice and yes seat is wider, but we are all slim so no difference. Food is the same, just the cutlery changes and you can't recline your seat more, and for me and the children it is almost impossible to sleep sitting down.
So we don't spend that money on the upgrade anymore.

It's not worth it I would rather spend the money saved on upgrading hotels and trips when in Thailand . A 11.5 hr flight is more than manageable in economy.

OlennasWimple · 12/01/2018 13:45

Check what you actually get for the upgrade: some airlines have a clear distinction between E and PE, some it's jsut about having a bigger seat

Another way of looking at it is that it works our a little over £13 per hour per person for the upgrade. Look carefully at the difference that the upgrade would give you. Is that difference worth an extra £13 each or £52 for the family, for each hour on the flight. That's a personal choice only you can make.

i've just got of a flight from Japan (12.5 hours). i was upgraded to premium on the way out but had regular economy on the way back, and actually found the regular seat better. the fancy leg rests in premium somehow made less space for my bag under the seat & just got in the way.
