Shorthaul City Break with 6 and 9 year olds

We'd like to go on a European city break over the Easter Holidays with the DC. We have been to Paris, Copenhagen and London in the last couple of years. As Easter is quite early, we'd like somewhere that is likely to be warm/dry rather than cold/wet but are hardy, outdoorsy northerners and could cope for somewhere excellent! I'd rather not visit Amsterdam, as I am going with some friends laster in the summer. I will take the DC one day, but if I'd prefer somewhere that is new to me too this time.

I strongly recommend Rome! We been last year with 7& 12 year DC. I have booked a few tours with a company called "Rome tours with kids" I can highly recommend them.
I think the weather should be ok in early April....

TheweewitchRoz · 06/01/2018 16:18

Belfast would be great for a weekend with children that age.

TheweewitchRoz · 06/01/2018 16:19

Or Dublin if you really want to leave the UK.

Janek · 06/01/2018 16:20

Berlin! Weather could be lovely, if not there are Kindercafes.

Neolara · 06/01/2018 16:22

Rome was brilliant with dc this age. Loads to see and do and when anyone whinged, we bought them an ice cream and they instantly cheered up.

Janek · 06/01/2018 16:22

Just realised - we took our 6 and 9 year olds to Prague a couple of years ago. We all thought it was great (although we had already been to Berlin, if we hadn't we might have gone there...).

CraftyGin · 06/01/2018 16:23

Rome, Barcelona

Taffeta · 06/01/2018 16:24

We’ve enjoyed Barcelona, Valencia, St Petersburg, Copenhagen, Paris and Amsterdam with the children

Barcelona was the most popular

VivaLeBeaver · 06/01/2018 16:26

Barcelona

tailsandscales · 06/01/2018 17:06

Budapest is good for kids but not sure what weather is like on April.
Rome and Barcelona would both be good too.

herecomesthsun · 06/01/2018 18:21

If you go to Barcelona at Easter we might bump into you with our 6 and 9 year olds.

TheAntiBoop · 06/01/2018 18:23

We went to Lisbon last Easter with kids the same age and it was really good

We are going to Rome this year

rosy71 · 06/01/2018 18:23

Bruges?

Santasbigredbobblehat · 06/01/2018 18:26

Valencia.

Costacoffeeplease · 06/01/2018 18:28

Another vote for Lisbon. Compact for a city with lots to see and do, very reasonable with great food and easy public transport. You could also do a trip to sintra and/or Cascais

LoniceraJaponica · 06/01/2018 20:00

Another vote for Rome or Lisbon. I loved them both.

LoniceraJaponica · 06/01/2018 20:03

Or Dubrovnik. It's magical.

Or Dubrovnik. It's magical.

OhPuddleducks · 06/01/2018 20:06

Madrid or Athens maybe if the weather is a big factor?

LoniceraJaponica · 06/01/2018 20:12

Sorry for the double posting. Don't know what happened there.

BikeRunSki · 06/01/2018 20:24

See, I really, really, really want to go to Berlin, but I don't want to go with the DC because they wont be interested in what I will be interested in. But the likelihood of going without them won't happen for another 10+ years!

Shortlist is
Barcelona
Giant's Causeway/Belfast
Berlin

But.... ooooh...... Dubrovnik

Rosy Bruges definitely soon, but we'll time it to coincide with the Tour of Flanders.

How about Malaga or Palma? I'd avoid them over the Easter weekend unless you want to see the Easter celebrations, as they'll be packed!

AngelsWithSilverWings · 07/01/2018 10:36

I was going to suggest Berlin too. We took our two a few years ago when they were 10 and 7 and they loved it. So much to do.

We took them to The Reichstag , Berlin Zoo , had lunch in The Tiergarten, the Jewish memorial , up the TV tower and took a train to the East Side Gallery , Brandenberg Gate , The Sony Centre , also did the David Bowie tour of Hansa Studios ( the kids took one for the team there but we wouldn’t have missed it for the world!) On the last day we took them the Lego Discovery centre.

We stayed in a fab but affordable hotel that had huge family suites and a swimming pool which the kids loved.

DH and I have been back since on our own and I’d still go back again as there is still stuff I want to do. Berlin is one of my favourite cities.
