Flying long haul solo with 18mo

I am planning to fly with my 18mo dd next month..just the two of us. She’s an experienced traveller, my dad was very ill just after she was born so we travelled a lot to see him and she was no trouble at all but our last and shortest flight was the most challenging when she was 11 months old. Now we’ll be flying 14 hours and she’s a strong willed, very vocal little lady who rarely sleeps anywhere except her cot and I’m quietly dreading this trip but have to go. We have the option to fly direct on a not very good airline ( very cramped seating) or have a stopover on a better airline. Im happy to pay for a seat for her, she’s a big girl, but I doubt she would sleep in it...I would pay for a business class seat if she sat on my lap but I couldn’t afford a seat for her too. If anyone has any advice on which option has worked well for them I’d gratefully receive it. Confused

Hi,

Some suggest Piriton but I'm not sure if that's ok. We did a 13hr fly to Sri lanka last month and I had good times and bad times.. of course.

First thing first - ASK FOR BASINET SEAT. Yes, your child is little bigger for a bassinet but hey those front seats are great if you travel with a baby. - you know that already.

Second, find and introduce yourself + baby to the air hostess trained to look after babies. There is always one there and those ladies are good with bottles and food preparations. - Also, you need to use the loo and you need a babysitter.

Third, book porters in advance on both airports. - don't take connection flights unless it's is necessary.

Fourth, I wouldn't personally get off the plane unless my pram is given to me. I am not carrying the baby changing bag, my hand-luggage and a wiggly toddler on my own for miles. - The airline must fetch the pram for you. I had Heathrow staff mourning but I didn't get off the plane until they bring it to me.

Little tips,

  • Pick the sleep times to be up in the air as possible.
  • Buy cheap toys or collect some bottles lids etc (whatever occupy them for few minutes)
  • Buy Apamil on the go milk and air hostess will help you with warming them.
  • Buy some Ella kitchen packs
  • If she is seated (mostly on your lap)

Also, there is a strap you can buy on Amazon to keep your child on your lap.

Good luck!

I really think go direct with her own seat.
