Travel on foot with a 4.5 year old! Help!

We just had our first stroller free holiday with my 4 year old son, and although we enjoyed it, I must say we didn't really feel we made most of it.
My husband and I love travelling to different cities in Europe as short breaks and wander around the streets.
I have been using a very light foldable Maclaren stroller so far but now as my son is in primary school I don't really like the idea of him sitting in a buggy.
But on foot, it was very, very difficult. He is an active child, and okay with walking but as you can imagine it was tiring for him and us to sightsee during day time.
So I am looking for suggestions, what does other people use? I see some people taking their kids with their bikes, but I won't feel safe in a foreign city as he can go too fast, traffic habits might be different etc.
What do people use? Foldable scooters, roller skaters and a tight rope ?:p

Any ideas? Are we being silly to think you can do city breaks with young kids like that...Should we just give up? Any advice welcome!

Adjust your expectations, plan days carefully with rest stops and child-friendly moments and catch more buses. Even 'active' children would rather be active by eg running round a park than by walking carefully through busy streets.

Those hop on hop off sightseeing buses or boats are the answer!
You can use them to get between places but also just to sit and chill while still seeing sights.
We have used them in Barcelona and Amsterdam to great effect.

In the Netherlands we took bikes and a tagalong to attach ds to mine.

Yeah I think you need to adjust your expectations however my son is a bit older, five on the 14th and we go big walks on his scooter and he alternates with walking too and sometimes either me and my dh will stick him on our shoulders.

Interspersed with ice cream/drink and park stops it should be doable.

There's also the option of a tullah piggy back style carrier. I wouldn't use one but some do.

Thanks everyone. He was a very good boy, didn't even request being picked up, he likes walking and running around a lot :)
However I think we definitely will have to adjust our expectations, or pick cities with bike hires available maybe!

ha ha no problem! I also think hop off hop on buses are great, but some small cities don't have them I think- but will definitely consider.
