July, single mum with DC 9 and 12. Things to do? Public transport? Will I survive...

yes, but you will need to plan. get a good travel guide and start working out what you want to see and do now. then work out the transport option. personally, I would be hiring a car. it will be a lot more convenient than public transport and I couldn't imagine hanging around in 35 degree heat with a couple of preteens waiting for a bus. go on to the forum on tripadvisor and see what info there is there in detail about public transport.

the key is forward planning otherwise you will just drift when you are there and the kids will get bored.

Thanks. We did a lot of travelling around last year and seeing lots of sights and we are a bit exhausted from that for now. The plan is for a holiday that is much more sort of...beach/pool lazy morning and a bit of a wander in the afternoons. Maybe just one or two main days out?

You will do more than just survive!! I am a single Mum and have taken my teens/preteens to Corfu for 4 years! We have done a bit of sightseeing and trips out but mostly chilling out on the beach or by the pool! I also used to live on Corfu many years ago so know it quite well.
What type of beach do you like? Sandy, pebbly?
How much 'entertainment' do you want at night? Quiet, some bars offering tribute acts, one or 2 'arcade' type places fior dc - pool tables etc) or full on party central? Public trBdport is fab and buses are usually on time, much easier than hiring a car if you are daunted by that. Taxis are cheap too.
You can book amazing trips on the island, to nearby islands or the mainland.
There's a big waterpark not far from Corfu Town which your bad might love.
You can do all sorts of water sports, scuba diving, boat trips, hero safaris etc etc.
It's fab!!

Hi can I jump in on this thread please as we are going to Corfu in June and need to stay in Corfu town or close to the airport for one night and also need to hire a car. Can anyone recommend either please.

Aw thanks jocktam! I’ve only driven in France before and hated it so have only ever used public transport on holiday since. Glad to hear that works! Would like a couple of sightseeing trips, maybe a boat trip...

Prefer a small resort with AI, near to a beach. Don’t mind none sandy beaches, I know there is a mix there.

Of all the places we’ve looked at, seems like it has the right mix to provide us with what we want this year - much more lazing around than we normally do but that’s what we feel like this year.

jocktamsonsbairn · 07/01/2018 20:15

Personally I don't like AI as I like eating out in resort but if that's what you want have a look at the Roda Beach Hotel. It on the north coast facing the Albanian mountains and is right on the beach. You can walk into resort but it is about 10-15 mins. Busy stops are in the resort too but you can book trips from the hotel. There is a fabulous taverna right next to the hotel which I thoroughly recommend! Alexandros on the beach,

jocktamsonsbairn · 07/01/2018 20:17

Friends enjoyed the AI at St Spyridion near the fabulous harbour town of Kassiopi but you are isolated and near a lagoon = breeding ground for mozzies! You'd need actaxi to get to towns/bus stops but can book trips from the hotel. It always comes up with good deals so thought I'd just let you know the facts!

Thank you! I’ll have a look Smile

DS is too fussy to eat out with too much, but we will head out for the odd meal, esp when out for the day. Still find AI worth it for the constant drinks and ice cream by the pool. Do hope to grow up soon though and move to self catering in a few years!

We are staying in Kalami but spending the first night in Corfu town. Very excited as not been away for over 4 years and never been to any part of Greece.

ComeOnGordon · 07/01/2018 22:24

Aw I went to Kalami when I was 19 & had a hot holiday romance with a boy from Warwick (I know this adds nothing to the thread but I still love Corfu)

outgrown · 08/01/2018 07:06

Haha love it!

WisestIsShe · 08/01/2018 22:38

Crispbutty I can highly recommend car hire
They were very reasonable and excellent service. I'd recommend the extra insurance as the roads and some of the driving in Corfu was, erm, interesting!
Also we totally loved the water park (aqualand?) Although the drive there was hair raising.

Crispbutty · 08/01/2018 23:31

That’s brilliant thankyou! :)

Yes I’m a bit worried about the driving. I’ve driven all over the USA and in Spain but I’m not a fan of mountains!

jocktamsonsbairn · 09/01/2018 22:08

I learned to drive on Corfu!! Many years ago! But yes there's a few hairy roads there!!
