Drugging your kids?

Have been told of a medicine that is better than Calpol or Medised to knock 'em out. Think it starts with an 'F'. Does anyone know? Would like to have some just in case DS decides that it's too exciting to sleep/sit still at all on the flight. Please don't think that I drug my child on a regular basis, as I don't, that's why I don't know the name of the medicine. Just really worried that we could have a long and tortuous journey.

phenergan.

tiredemma · 24/04/2007 16:29

sorry meant to add, I have used it. A dr prescribed it for my eldest boy as he only used to sleep about 3 hours a night and the Dr thought it would establish a routine of sleep..........

.....how wrong he was, a side effect of phenergan is it having the opposite effect, ds was hyper all night and when he did manage to fall asleep, seemed to suffer the most horrific night terrors.

Thanks tiredemma, that sounds like the one that I heard someone talk about.
Sorry to hear that it had the opposite effect. Hope your ds sleeping has improved anyway.
We've had some dreadful nights with night terrors. It's horrid for everyone.
Maybe I'll let him run amok in the airport and hopefully he'll tire out.
Thanks for your help.

you must try it be4 u use on flight as it is a common side effect on some dc that they become hyper on it and not sleepy.

he is fine now- sleeps like a log!

this was when he was about three ( @ 4 yrs ago)

it is good stuff, so long as it doesn't make them hyper. Ds1 has hypermobility and he acts drunk on it and can't even stand up, so we have to give him very low doeses. It is also used for travel sickness so I don't really see anything wrong with using it for flying. I first started using it for dd, who was terribly travel sick, and would be violently sick even on very short trips. It worked wonders.

Have jsut got back brom taking the worlds worse sleeper (27 month) on a trip to Brazil.

I thought of druging him but didn't in the end. We had a day flight on the way out. He was so excited and at the airport and ran around constantly for about 3 hours. Put that with a late night and early start he fell asleep not long after take off (we were struggling to keep him awake as we wanted him to eat). He slept for about 3 hours. the rest of the flight was a 'challenge' but we had lots of books, stickers etc. Each new activity would last for about 30-45 min. The positive side was that we weren't bored at all. He was well-behaved and it was nice to spend the one on one time.

It was a night flight ont he way back. He slept nearly the whole way. He woke often and was clearly uncomfortable. Poor DP had the worse as he had him draped over him for most of it (I am 7 month pg and used that as my excuse - no rrom at the inn).

Good luck - are you going anywhere nice?

We used it to get out daughter (then 18 months) from London - Sydney via Hong Kong.

It worked, I think, in so far as, it didn't make her hyper. She slept for 9 hours to Hong Kong but woke up at 5am and didn't go back to sleep. She slept for about 4 hours on the day flight to Sydney but was tired anyway.

Not sure how much of that was down to Phenergan.
