Snorkelling in Fuerteventura

How deep is the water where you snorkel to see fish, and how strong a swimmer should my nearly 10 Year old be?

Any other recommendations of destinations for fans of Blue Planet 2 gratefully received.

Not been to Fuerteventura, but have snorkelled lots in Canaries and Med. Great fish life in Lanzarote so hopefully similar in Fuerteventura if you have access to the right sort of beach.

Water doesn't have to be deep (even less than a metre deep can have lots of fish) and fish congregate near rocks so a good place to go would be a little bay with rocks around it. But need to be careful to not bash heads on rocks. Will you or another adult be supervising?

Where are you going? Whatever you are doing, a nice day out from FV is to get the ferry over to Playa Blanca in Lanzarote as a foot passenger. There are 2 good snorkelling beaches either side of the ferry terminal, about 15-20 mins walk (Playa Flamingo and Playa Dorada) that are perfect. I've snorkelled and dived in those and there are loads of fish.

I have done snorkelling in Fuerteventura. We did an excursion from Costa Caleta. It was fun but incredibly cold despite being July and 35C on land. Maybe I’m soft and used to warner oceans. We went quite far out from shore so water was deep and you’d need to be able to swim reasonably well.

On Christmas day we swam here in fuerteventura. Water cold but fine once you were in. Fish were around our feet (in Caleta de fuste). Some reasonable size. All a similar species so great for kids but not particularly exciting for adult snorkelers.

For guaranteed beach and swimming weather I'd recommend slightly warmer part of the year.

At Caleta de fuste there are two beaches near the Sheraton hotel that they've built walls out to sea making them more lagoon like and calmer (fuerteventura is a quite windy Isle) and it was great swimming there. The rest of our holiday has been cloudier so we've not had the chance to swim off the main Caleta de fuste beach.

If you are thinking of coming here, I recommend the Geranios Suites. Lovely rooms.
