Canvas holidays v Keycamps

Are Canvas holidays OK? Had our first family camping holiday last year with Keycamps and Canvas prices seem pretty good. Are they similar? I'm looking to book for half term as dh will be working so want to go away in a low hassle way with 4 kids from 3 - 13...
Thanks for any advice.

Canvas Holidays are based near me, I know a number of people who have had very enjoyable Canvas Holidays, they have a good reputation.

Went on two canvas holidays to France when I was a teenager with my own parents many, many moons ago. It was very good, but if I was to go now I would choose some of the smaller sites rather than a big coastal one because, they were a bit more peaceful - depends what you are after really. I have never been with Keycamps though, so I can't compare.

(don't know why I put a comma after "because")

Thanks, think I'll book in the morning. At least there are pools etc for the children to use and I get a week off proper cooking!

ooh, canvas have huge mobiles with DISHWASHERS!!!! Always wanted to stay in one of those but we go with French Life so we can use our tesco vouchers to pay for the holiday!

The mobiles etc for Canvas always seem to look a bit more modern than the Keycamp ones. Hope you have a fab holiday!

Have done both, go with whoever is offering the best deal. Check if the kids clubs are running at halfterm if you are thinking of using them. We went with canvas last year because the kids club was open and age appropriate.

Thanks, I've booked it with Canvas now! 340 for the week in S of France - no van with dishwasher but I have lots of eating techniques for avoiding too much washing up and don't cook properly on holiday. Dh may or may not be there, but will drive down with us anyway and I'll drop him off at Nice airport if necessary. Dh and I met in St Tropez 24 years ago so I love going back to the area.

PS That does NOT mean my kids spend the week on fruit shoots and nuggets

Having our first Canvas holiday next month so hoping it fulfils its good reputation...going to SW France (near Spanish border). Went on loads of Eurocamp hols when I was a kid but we thought we'd give Canvas a go...

swedishmum · 23/04/2007 21:32

I only found the holiday by chance - I have a sensitive mouse on my laptop and through MN (of course) the link at the top of the camping section suddenly came up. Woulkdn't have thought of Canvas otherwise I don't think. Here's hoping we have great holidays MrsGumby!

Cheers Swedishmum - can't wait to get away (I've never needed a break so much in my life!). Looking forward to a few glasses of the local plonk, too...

cailin2 · 23/04/2007 23:02

Have been with Canvas a few times & they are quiet good, never with keycamp but their mobiles look a bit old & tired. It would be worth checking out booking directly with the owners of mobiles on different site, they are generally cheaper & are much better equipped as they kit them out for themselves on their own holidays, so you get lots of little extras that you wouldn't get with the 'package' companies. We have used www.frenchmobilehomes.com lots of times & they are great. Def recommend checking them out.

WendyWeber · 23/04/2007 23:07

FWIW since last year Canvas belong to the same company as English Country Cottages, Welcome etc - I don't know if that will make any diff to their standards but at least they are still operated out of the same offices in Dunfermline (for now...)

We had a few Eurocamp hols when our kids were little and I always lusted after Canvas tents because they had a kitchen and a loo

CantSleepWontSleep · 01/05/2007 22:32

lol Swedishmum - was just searching archives for 'Canvas', as dh and I are considering one for the summer. Do let us know what you think of them, although we'll have probably booked (or decided not to) by the time you return. Which one have you booked? We're looking at one in Vendee so that the drive isn't too long.

You're brave to take all the kids without dh - dh and I are trying to rope in someone else to come with us to ease the burden of keeping just one child entertained!

swedishmum · 02/05/2007 00:51

He's just told me he's in Prague for the middle of the week that week. Ho hum. Guess I'll drop him off at Nice, and while he's away we'll eat take away pizza. We're going to Pachacaid in S of France. Dh has already noted the local Meridiens in case of emergency!

Hi mobile home people, can any of you advise whether a UK stair gate will fit the main entrance to the type of mobile home on WEurocamp/Canvas type sites? Have visions of 7 month old disappearing down the front steps the second I turn my back. You can get travel stair gates that fit a minimum opening of 71 cm - anyone know if that's too big or not? Thanks

TheDaVinciCod · 13/06/2007 19:56

in our gaff the keycmap ones were the smartest

wher you going sm?

lilolilmanchester · 14/06/2007 20:42

swedishmum, can you share your washing-up avoiding eating techniques? Would love to know - and not just for holidays!

ChippyMinton · 14/06/2007 20:50

KATGOD some of the companies provide stairgates - if you've booked i'd call the company to check.
LOL at washing-up avoidance techniques. I don't wash up the rest of the year so quite enjoy donning my marigolds to rinse out the cafetiere and brush patisserie crumbs from the plates.
