Help...acted on a whim and now feel like a Wally. I have forgotten anything I knew about travelling abroad. Going to Nuremberg - will my Visa card or credit card work?
Do most people speak English or do I need to use google translate and practise at home?
The kids all have giant parkas - do they wear these on the plane, are planes hot or cold I can't remember! Are coats luggage?
I have a giant bag for the hold and a tiny one for the plane, is this best? The carry on bag will be in the hold anyway as not paid for priority boarding - should I have done so?
Honestly it took me hours to choose a bag! And why can you pack your roll on in your hold bag but not your carry on?
Any advice from a pro or someone who knows the area or Ryan Air very welcome. I need to look cool in front of the children as my little girl is terrified of flying - thanks others!

Calm down!
Of course your visa will work!
Coats aren't luggage and you take them off when you get hot.
You will be fine languagewise but make an effort.
I haven't been to Nuremberg yet as I tend to go to Munich, Berlin or Stuttgart.
With Ryan air you can have a cabin sized bag and a handbag which is what I always have for up to 12 days away.
If you want a roll on taking on to the plane you can buy one once you have gone through security.
Honestly relax! You will be fine.

No liquids gels or pastes in hand luggage, except below limits which you can look up.
Get travel insurance now.
Tell bank and credit card people or cards may be blocked.
Take cash
Planes are both hot and cold.

If you have online banking you can advise your bank that you are going abroad or inform via phone. Some cards allow you to take money out of cash machine with no extra charges, some charge an abroad fee, check with your bank. Or take cash and exchange it when you get to where you are going on holiday. If you are going in the winter take hat, gloves, scarves, layers, good shoes to walk in.

Already great advice by others. What about travel insurance, and that European health card?

Your post explains why I don't like to travel, have the same sensation when having to travel. Plus worrying about being stuck abroad, not being able to return, which is very irrational when you think about it.

You will be fine.
Planes can be chilly - my daughter runs hot but always wears a cardigan to fly. Plus, wear coats. It will be cold the other side.
Yes, your cards will work abroad.
You will need to put ALL liquids and makeup etc in the hold bag. This saves the messing on of putting things in a see through plastic bag ( which you have to do if you have them I hand luggage. It is a small plastic bag, like a freezer bag with a top which fastens. Nothing bigger than 100ml in size)
I would buy the kids drinks when you are airside from one of the shops ( if you are flying around a meal time then a ' meal deal' from boots or Smiths is a good buy whe you get through security) as all drinks are expensive in the air.
Language wise you will be fine. English has been taught in Germany since the 1950's. But do try and encourage your kids too.
I always have a fold down/ canvas shopping bag in my handbag too. DD always wants a drink and a comic or book which I buy airside, plus snack / sandwich etc.
You don't need priority boarding if you have booked seats- if you haven't I would advise you to .
Keep passports and boarding cards in a seperate section of your handbag, there's nothing worse than stuffing them in then not being able to find them. Make sure you print your boarding cards off for outward and inbound flights as if you don't have them you get charged a fortune at the checkin for them to print off.
Take some sweets- somethimg hard that's suck able, like a mint or a weathers original. If you kids suffer from sensitivity due to air pressure ( which you won't know if they haven't ever flown before) the their ears may hurt. Tell them to expect a funny feeling in their ears. Earplugs, the soft ones can help with this too. I always carry them when flying. Give them a couple of sweets whe you're getting into the runway, they need to be sucking them when the plane takes off and climbs to altitude.
Make sure they use the loo before you board.
It's not unheard of for planes to be delayed on the Tarmac and you can't use the loos.
I always keep my seatbelt on whilst travelling and make sure my daughter does too. It's personal preference but I don't take my belt off.
Bags have to be out in overhead licker or in the floor and pushed under the seat in front of you. No bags on knee for takeoff/ landing.
Can't think of anything else but good luck and don't stress! You will be fine, and just encourage your Dd to enjoy it.

Hurray you lovelies

You know I was doing ok until I read about visa not being favoured and an EC card being preferred then I wobbled! Excellent everything will go in the hold bags except important stuff and my fold down bag, We will wear our coats and keep sucky sweets in our pockets and soft ear plugs. when arrived we will of course try with the language though am so awful at languages... makes me so embarrassed! We will get a meal deal and use any toilet we can access:)

I have insurance and am getting cash tomorrow and have printed passes and am about to down load the app too - have shoes and luggage labels and yes it will be fun.

the daft thing is although I have't been abroad in ages I have flown all over the place in the past but the past is indeed a foreign country it turns out!

Thank you everyone:))
