Lapland- what to wear on the plane

Hi

We are off to Lapland on Friday and I am wondering what to wear on the plane and carry on hand luggage 're layers and warmth. Don't want to overheat on the plane but don't want to freeze when we get there. Did you just take a single lot of layers for all in hand luggage?

Thanks

We took hat, gloves scarf and wore ski jackets over a jumper (knotted onto backpack).

To give you an idea of the temperature, you land on ice! No clear runway or roads there.

Wow to the ice. Thanks so much for the heads up. Much appreciated.

Is this one of the trips where they give you the snow suits and the boots? We just came back.

Layers, layers, layers. We all wore a base thermal layer and thin proper layer (long sleeve tshirt and thin jogging bottoms or leggings). Take your own gloves, scarves and hats, as don't says. Thick socks.

If yours is the same sort of trip, you will spend a lot of time taking the suits on and off - you can't wear it in the restaurants so it comes off completely, plus every time you get back on the coach you need to drop the top of it or you'll melt. It's a bit of a pain but the suits are gloriously warm.

It was 'warm' when we were there - only minus 6. The staff were saying that they couldn't bring one group of huskies out to work because it was too hot for them.

Layers and take extra socks for putting on before you get off the plain.
Woolen gloves aren't good as they get too wet (freeze).
The biggest shock was how cold it was when we exited the airport, minus 18. The inside of our noses froze so have your face covered as my little girl got upset with that.

Thank you so much maddie and kuriu. It is a trip with the snowsuit. This is all super helpful. Really appreciate the comment about temp outside of the airport too, mine would also be upset by that.

Can I please ask one more thing? If snowsuits, did you get given snowboots too?

I am thinking I might send DC on the plane on snowboots actually.

Yes we did. The suits and boots were very, very warm.
The hotels are also very warm inside, literally toasty hot to the point of being overly warm. For instance during the night the bedroom was very warm.
Top tip - if you have any kind of Christmas Gala meal or similar included, everyone wore Christmas Jumpers (and I took reindeer ears for DD), it was lovely.
Also, drinks and snacks in the hotels were mega expensive (Finnish Lapland is an expensive place). We knew we had a kettle in our room so took a jar if instant hot chocolate with us (and some biscuits).
To give you and idea of what DD wore on the plane (underwear, a long sleeved tshirt, a Christmassy top, jogging bottoms. Normal coat.
Before we disembarked I added a pair of thick tights under her joggers and another thicker cardigan. Normal winter coat. She had one of those hats with ear covers.

I'll be honest and say we didn't take a lot of special ski/winter sport clothes, one of the best things I found were thermal pyjamas (I got them from Primark). So on the days out we all wore normal underwear, then thermal/thick tights, thermal pyjamas, long sleeved tops with roll necks, leggings, a warm fleece and then the snowsuit. On my second day I never wore my fleece and I was too warm. Nobody sees what is under your snowsuit and you'll see adults and kids in the oddest combinations once everyone gets back to the hotels etc.

Thank you Maddie, you are a star!

Come to this too late as you’ve already been, but just in case someone else finds this thread useful. We travelled out to Helsinki this December (I planned a diy trip to Lapland involving the overnight train to Rovaniemi) and like you travelled hand baggage only.

Made the mistake of wearing my salopettes and snow boots on the plane and was sweltering.

In Lapland we didn’t need our thermal base layers, but it was ‘only’ -5 degrees.

MissDeeWindo · 22/12/2017 09:58

Oriunda we’re considering a DIY trip. Do you know if you can hire the thick snowsuits there or if you are given them for any booked activities (e.g. snowmobiling)? Any tips much appreciated!

Oriunda · 05/01/2018 16:40

So sorry, just seen this. We just borrowed or purchased very cheap/secondhand ski gear off EBay/Facebook and friends. I think it’s only the organised package trips that lend you the snowsuits and shoes.

adele101 · 12/11/2025 12:42

where do you collect your snowsuits and boots from when it is included in the trip? do you collect them in the airport or hotel?

adele101 · 12/11/2025 12:42

when do you get your snowsuits and boots when they are included in the trip? is it at the airport or hotel?
