Best age for baby to go abroad first time?

We are looking at booking a holiday with our little boy for next year to Tenerife for our First family holiday.
We can’t decide what would be better for him to be younger so he’s not walking etc or for him to be a bit older so that he knows what’s going on ie we are going in an aeroplane etc.
So he would be 8/9 Months if we went earlier next year or we would then go when he was 1 years old +.
Pros and cons for both I guess but I would be interested to hear what age you went away with your little ones and how you found it if you would do anything different etc?
Thanks guys!

Personal attach, fluffywallow? Seriously? You are doing something environmentally irresponsible which materially, physically affects my DS's future, and yet me posting fairly mildly on a message board is a "personal attack"?

You need to get a grip. And get your head out of the sand.

(And threads develop in all kinds of ways. Have you not ever read any before?)

Toddler age will be difficult. By the time they've learned to walk, they won't want to sit still in the car / plane and don't want to sit in the buggy when you're out. Baby definitely.

Echo the previous poster’s comments about going away when and where it suits you. Within reason, babies can slot in around your plans. It’s when they start toddling that you need to begin thinking about activities for them too so make the most of this time.

I wouldn't take a baby to Tenerife. It's too hot - you'll be endlessly stressing about heat and shade and crawling off.

At under 2, he isn't going to know that he's going on an airplane I'm afraid, whether he's walking or not, and he won't remember it.

What's wrong with Tenerife? It's not that hot!! Get them a uv suit and hat and keep them out of the midday sun (usually napping then anyway) and spend lots of time splashing in a baby pool.

5 years old was good for us.

We took our baby when she was nearly 11 months to Mallorca. At the difficult cruising/need to sleep in her cot for naps stage.
It was fine. We were in the holiday village so everything was set up for kids so minimal babyproofing needed. All baby crap included/easily and cheaply hired. We also had a duplex so went up there when she was napping/at night with the baby monitor and didn't feel like we were missing out. She loved all the kids entertainment which we didn't expect at her age.

We are planning on going back in June when she will be 18months and I'm delighted to hear it'll be easier than the cruising stage! It didn't feel that bad for us.

Travelled since both ours were babies , the hardest age is between 15mth to 2yrs . Because their running around at this stage , they don't understand they have to sit still. We flew 3/4 times a year until they started school. Now due to school holiday restrictions only fly twice a year. When they were little it was for my benefit but now their older it's def for theirs . I think it's so important for children to travel and see the world .

I think holidays are easier than being at home because there are 2 if you to share tasks , no work and most domestic tasks are simpler even when self catering.
It is a bit easier when they aren’t mobile and can sleep in the buggy while you go out to eat or whatever.
There are loads of distractions for small children while you are away. I was always averse to swimming pools while the children were tiny but otherwise. Any type of holiday can work. I agree with op who suggested sling or back pack particularly if you are doing a lot of sightseeing .

snackarella · 06/11/2017 18:55

We did 7 months to Italy and 12 Months to Tenerife. She defo enjoyed the later one more but the 7 month one was easier for us as she couldn’t run in the direction of the pool! Tenerife at 12 Months was hard work but she loved the pool and had her first ice cream!
Depends what kind of holiday you want! x

oldlaundbooth · 06/11/2017 18:56

Around 18 I'd say.

Mrscog · 06/11/2017 19:00

God as early as possible and not once they’re mobile. Holidays went like this for us - 4 months was amazing. 14 months - hell, 18 months - hell, 2 yo - partial hell 2.5 yrs - improving.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 11/11/2017 17:50

I took my eldest at 8 weeks and my youngest at 6 months, I think 8 weeks was easier, I breastfed so had no worries about feeding. 6 months was fine too though.

You'll be fine whenever you go though

I took DS when he was 3 months old to see family and then at 9 months to a beach holiday. Until he was mobile, it was quite easy.
