We may soon be going to holland, mil has apparently made suggestions that it will be good that "there is no car seat law for children in holland" as more of us will fit in a car, my dh has explained that it is unfortunate but my baby 11months will still go in her car seat regardless of law (we will be travelling in a car driven by vague relatives of mil that neither i nor dh have met for a minimum of two hours, to and from airport without considering activities in a country we have never visited).

But that aside i wanted to know what the law is in Holland as i am sure mil is mistaken, as didnt the new law here 'bring us in line with Europe'? I have tried looking at car rental site which suggest the law is stricter than here in some respects (no under threes in front etc.) but wanted a comprehensive explanation if poss.

Then i can explain that it will be awkward but is part and parcel of travelling with a baby and we cannot even consider breaking THE LAW so no more discussion...

Your MIL is wrong! In the Netherlands all children under 135 cm need to be in an approved carseat! Exception is if you have already two seats on the backseat then the third child (as long as he/she is older than 3) can wear a seatbelt. But an 11 months old baby needs to go in a carseat. You're right in saying that the UK adapted European law so this is the case is all EU countries.

The thought of travelling with baby on lap in the car and the consequences if anything at all happens ....

Dont worry! My dd will be in her car seat, regardless of the law but i wanted to have proof for mil its not ME being awkward times have changed since she had her kids (oldest is 40, youngest 27, so a while ago!)

She was tellig a story about her dh (my late fil) learning to drive and sliding backwards on a steep hill as there were 3 women and 4 children in the back of the car so thwey had to get out and walk up! So times have changed!

Only printed proof I have is a link to a website but it's in dutch so might not be much use unless your MIL can read dutch
Otherwise you will just have to convince her that a dutch mumsnetter really does know better than her
