i have a 10 yr old niece who has developed facial hair on her top lip, its quite noticiable and shes being badly teased at school. wax, lighten? any tips as its really getting her down.

Whip it off with a razor, and just don't tell anyone.

Waxing facial hair can really hurt, my sister did it once then started bleaching! MHO is if you want to do waxing make sure you take her to get it down by a professional then at least you know its being done as well as it can be.

waxing definately lasts longer...But as already said make sure you go to a professional salon. Also dont make any plans for a few hours afterwards as it is usually quite red.. If you bleach then the hair can still be quite noticable just a different colour.. especially if she has quite dark skin.

DO NOT SHAVE IT!!!!!

poor girl, i find it hard enought to deal with this at 35. she is too wee for electrolysis or the more sinister methods so go for waxing.

is laser treatment bad?

bran · 10/04/2007 16:30

Poor child. I'm not sure that you can wax that young. I think the very young and the very old have thinner skin (or something) so waxing can damage/bruise the skin. Do any hairdressers/beauty salons in your area do threading? It might be less damaging than waxing as it just pulls the hairs a few at a time and not the skin.

Has she had a blood test to make sure her hormone levels are ok, or is this something that runs in her family?

it depends if she is dark skinned though?

hifi · 10/04/2007 17:01

shes pale skinned, it does run in the family and i had a terrible time when i was young. started plucking and its still no better 30 yrs on.

Bleach it, i am often distracted by womens stubble...

elasticbandstand · 10/04/2007 17:05

trip to gps perhaps for blood test?

LandSmum · 10/04/2007 17:07

I too am pale skinned and had facial hair on my top lip from not much older than your niece. I really feel for her - I ocassionally got teased but didnt bother me too much. Think it comes from having really dark hair. I used to bleack using Jolen cream bleach - but tbh it prob made it more noticeable and people could prob tell I had bleached to try and disguise it cos I was never teased til I started bleaching. I now wax using Veet strips - cant remember the exact name. they are really quick and easy to use and I have used them since my early teens.

thanks for all the advice, i think we will try bleaching first. Any more advice welcome.

If the hair is quite fine bleaching will probably be enough for now, mine has dark thick hairs which I pluck out and then shave the fluffy bits quite often, but the dark ones would come in as a 5 oclock shadow if I shaved them.

DO NOT SHAVE IT!!
