Have heard Morecombe is a nice place for a day out. Has anyone got any recommendations of activities there for a 2,5and 7 year old? I was thinking of going this week if the weather is fine.

there's a bowling/laser zone place and a cinema. other than that there's not much tbh, unless you like cheapo shops or eric morecambe. there used to be a theme park, frontierland, but that might be shut now.

Have you been recently BD? I was only thinking of going as MIL went recently and was surprised at how well it had been re-developed and suggested it would be a good place to take the children. Thought I would check out what it is like with people who have kids before making the trek there. I think she said that the beach was really nice now.

Think they are tidying it up but not exactly many activites there.Think down at heel Blackpool without the pleasure beach!

MrsWho · 09/04/2007 20:33

Where abouts are you coming from? Loads of better places in the area!

MorocconOil · 09/04/2007 20:46

Worse than Blackpool!!What's MIL doing recommending what sounds like a really depressing day out?!?
We are coming from Manchester Mrs Who.

Good beach but check the tides - not much else though.

MrsWho · 09/04/2007 20:56

Oh yeah have to be very careful of tides on Morcambe bay

MorocconOil · 09/04/2007 21:10

Great, potentially highly dangerous, as well as depressing. MIL can't be that fond of me can she? Think we'll give it a miss!! Isn't that where the cockle pickers were killed, come to think of it?

Well Morcambe rather than Morcambe b ut yeah.
Maybe this should be in AIBU- My MIL wants me to go to Morcambe!

BizzyDint · 09/04/2007 21:23

yes they are tidying it up. but it's an incredibly miserable place. basically it's full of old hotels and b&bs now occupied by bail hostels, rehoused peodphiles, asylum seekers etc etc...it's really no fun at all. they are really trying to get the place sorted but it's a slow process. i used to live in lancaster, the next town, which is far far nicer. morecambe is very much the poor neglected relation. further up the road you have kendal, the lakes and so on.... it's up to you but i wouldn't choose to go there for an hour, let alone a day or a weekend.

morecambe tourism website

Thanks for the link BizzyDint. Looked at what's on for kids and it looks dire. We'll definately go somewhere else. Thanks everyone for saving us the journey and disappointment.

It's not dire if you're a child.
There's Happy Mount Park with free splash pool (fountains, squirty stuff) great fun on a hot day, train rides, merry-go-round, swing boats, golf, play-ground, indoor soft-play, nice picnic areas, cafe - all within the one pleasant park.

We go there every few weeks as we're only 25 minutes away.

The beach is not too bad for sandcastles, but I wouldn't go in the sea.

Clarinet60 · 25/07/2007 16:31

And the view of the bay is unsurpassed, especially if you stick to the nice end, which has been much improved with sculptures, installations, etc. Morecambe now consists of a nice end and a grotty end, but watch this space.... much more is predicted.
