Harrods in London

temmy99 · 06/04/2007 10:13

I would like to take the children (16, 10, 4 and 8mths) to Harrods as they are curious as much as I (never been before) to know what it is like. I heard that they have a dress code i.e no jeans or trainers. Does anyone know what the code is, I would not like to go all the way there only not to be allowed in. Your responses most appreciated. thanks.

don't think jeans are a problem - they don't like rucksacks (have to carry them on hands rather than on your back) ... i would check their website just to be sure

I go in wearing jeans all the time!

I think you just need to make sure you are fully dressed - ie in the summer guys without t-shirts will be refused.

it's not very thrilling so don't get too excited

temmy, its a shop.
make sure you haave a backup plan. harrods is just a shop at the end of the day.

have alook on here kids visit london

MissGolightly · 06/04/2007 10:28

They don't let you wear ripped jeans. In general they just look for reasons to turn away scruffs so if you ensure you all look reasonably presentable you should be fine.

Make sure you visit the egyptian department, the food hall and the toy department, also there is an ace cafe on something like the 7th or 8th floor which does amazing '50s style ice-cream sundaes, eaten to the accompaniment of a tinkling piano.

Your main problem will be getting the kids out without spending a fortune. The science museum and museum of natural history are within walking distance if you want to make a day of it.

DimpledThighs · 06/04/2007 10:28

I worked in the toy department for a while. I think they will like it and there is the big park over the road for a run around.

the dress code is basically don't be scruffy or revealing. I would not go in shorts and avoid rucksacks if you can - but depends on the doorman - I think if they don't like the look of you they grab at a reason why you can't go in.

If you need the loo say you are preganant and then you won't have to pay a pund - children are free.

Not taking bags in is a problem if you've come a distance. You can leave them across the road in another place which I did once. I think there might be a fee for that. Look at the pet department. We nearly bought a rabbit the last time we were in but they didn't have the right sex. There are some very sweet dogs up there. I suggest an hour at most, spend as little as possible, given them a small budget each may be for the food hall and then go to the science or natural history museum for lunch and entry there is free.

temmy99 · 06/04/2007 11:36

will they allow a baby bag? I like the idea of the museums so I will definitely incorporate that in. If I can fit all their snacks in the bag and under the pushchair, hopefully I might just survive the day!!! Is there anything else I might need to know i.e. queues at the museum, will it be better to go there earlier before going to Harrods or vice versa?

I would do Harrods first, then the museums. But that's just me.

Are trainers allowed for the children as we will be walking quite a bit on the day or should I get them to wear sandals? we are hoping to go on monday if the weather forecast is still 'nice and sunny'!

Don't worry about trainers!
Most poepe who shop at Harrods are tourists.
As long as you look like your might spend money you'll be OK.
Anyway, there is more than one door, if one doorman is snotty, you could always try another
And remember it's just a shop!

chocolateface · 07/04/2007 09:24

They just don't like rucksacks, even carried on one shoulder, and however small.

Judy1234 · 07/04/2007 10:44

If you have a lot of bags leave them across the road where I was sent with a case by security last time I tried to take one in. Other times I just walk in in a crowd of other people in an area without a guard around and it's fine. My twins would have had trainers on the last time we were in there looking at rabbits. I thnk they're just looking to avoid anyone very scruffy.

chocolateface · 09/04/2007 21:53

How did you get on in Harrods?

kslatts · 10/04/2007 14:47

I have worn jeans and trainers and haven't been turned away. Natural History museum is fantastic.

temmy99 · 11/04/2007 00:17

Thank you everyone for your advice and suggestions, Harrods was just a shop, we went to all the floors but we didn't locate the pets which is just as well as my ds was hoping to get one which I really don't fancy. We got away with buying a box of easter chocolates for half price and we had lunch at Mcdonalds, well it was a day outing. We went to the history museum and the children loved it especially the dinosaurs and the section about the human body. we were there till the museum closed at 5.50. All in all it was a nice day. thanks again
