Head slumping forward in car seat

Hi,

i have a M&P primo viaggio car seat for my daughter who is now 5 months. Even though i'm sure the seat and straps are all fitted correctly she still often slumps her head forward when she falls asleep, i have a mirror so i can see here and although she always seems fine it looks wrong and i worry that she'll have trouble breathing - i'm i just being over protective? is it quite normal for babies to do this?

We have had exactly the same problem - I think it is a design fault and to be honest I would get a different car seat if we have another baby. I really think it is quite dangerous.... I have double checked that the straps are tight enough etc but it still happens. Now that DS is 7 months I am happy that he can always lift his head when he wakes up and he can rearrange himself if not comfy but when he was smaller it was quite scary.
I completely agree with your concerns

No, it's not a design fault, it's what heads do when they fall asleep!

SoupDreggon · 04/04/2007 20:16

Unless your straps go across yoyr baby's forhead, why do you think tightening them will keep their head up?? And if the straps do go across their forhead, you've seriously misunderstood the fitting instructions

I clicked on this thread because we are having the same problem - and lo and behold we have just the same car seat. I don't know whether it's because it's too upright or what, but you're right, it is worrying.

I think we're going to have to get another one anyway - dd is quite long, and will be too big for it well before she is 9 months old, so am not very impressed with it on that level either.. And I started a thread on that, and loads of other people have had the same problem too. So, M&P, not much good really.

henrybaba · 04/04/2007 20:19

Get your point.....
But what I mean is that other car seats often don't cause this to happen as they are not so upright and when you put a young baby with limited head control in the seat they can't lift their head up again which can be quite scary....

I have the same carseat, had same problem, even emailed M&P, and they said it was so upright because it was safer. I bought a neck cushion thingy and that helped quite abit

Have the same car seat and the same problem - it is quite worrying when they are young (we drove 5 hours to Cornwall when Ds was 3 months old and he spent most of it with his head slumped forward ) but as another poster has said, when they get older, they can lift their own head up.

Not sure I would get the same car seat again tbh

LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/04/2007 20:20

i had this in primo vaggios and gracos. all first size seats tbh.

Quootiepie · 04/04/2007 20:22

Oh, don't know if you read the research about babies suffocation or lungs getting crushed or something (was this that made me email M &P) but the general advice is take them out every 20 mins (asleep or not). I thought about getting another carseat next time, but I have the whole travel system and found it soooooo handy, and well, when I emailed them they said their research showed the uprightness (is that a word?) made it safer.

Quootiepie · 04/04/2007 20:22

*suffocating

noseynora · 04/04/2007 23:03

We had exactly this problem. DD was pretty small, and I was just not happy with her in it so we ended up buying a Maxi Cosi. SO much better. DD could sleep in it without her head slumping at all (you get a newborn insert too). It was not anything like as upright as the M&P. Don't know why the M&P is so popular - it's a terrible design.

I got a bebe confort seat for my ds precisely because it was more horizontal. Jane does a lie flat one. When I was a baby I was in a carrycot on the back seat.

noseynora · 04/04/2007 23:06

I mean, we ended up buying a Maxi Cosy to replace our M&P Prima Viaggio..

noseynora · 04/04/2007 23:07

Me too. And not strapped in in any way either. And was viewed as perfectly fine

emmajlh · 05/04/2007 20:29

Thanks for all your messages, worrying that it is so common with this car seat. My daughter had unusually strong head control from birth so she's never been a real 'head flopper' except when she's asleep of course. i think with the next baby i'll get a different car seat, which is a shame as i have the travel system too.
