City break without DC!

DP and I have the chance of a child-free short holiday over October half term - but absolutely no idea where to go (having not been child-free for about ten years!). Where would you choose, o wise MN-ers? Nothing super-expensive, we're on a budget - thought maybe Barcelona, but any other suggestions would be great - TIA Smile and excited dance Grin

Rome! My favourite city in the world!

Wilberforce2 · 13/09/2017 16:54

Me and Dh went to Seville before having kids and have always said that if we ever get a child free weekend again we would go back as we loved it!

NapQueen · 13/09/2017 16:56

Dh and I did a europe rail trip before kids and our favourite place was Krakow. I would love to go back. I also really enjoyed Geneva.

Nice is lovely too, and I would recommend the train into monaco for the day.

implantsandaDyson · 13/09/2017 22:15

We're going to Krakow this year without the kids - we're not counting down the days at all Wink. We've been to Paris a few times which we love. I haven't been but a few people I know have been to Budapest recently and have loved it.

Sounds like us a over the last bank holiday weekend. We couldn't think of anything and booked a surprise trip with ATO-Tours. We were a bit worried to start with but that soon went and they booked us a lovely weekend in Salzburg.

keely79 · 14/09/2017 10:12

dh and I are planning to go to Granada next year. We really want to see the Alhambra and much better to see it without kids whining that they are tired! Then late night tapas and flamenco. Perfect.

sniffydog · 14/09/2017 10:40

Berlin (if you haven't been). It's amazing. Or Porto is very nice - lovely city, interesting food and trips up the river to vineyards... wistfully remembering pre-child holidays

No1HolidayPlanner · 14/09/2017 15:57

Nice is fab.. and so easy and cheap to get around on public transport to visit Cannes, Monaco etc. We have had 2 child free breaks there and can't wait to return😊

Desperad0 · 14/09/2017 15:59

Barcelona is great. Bruges? Venice? Rome?

christmasmum · 14/09/2017 15:59

If you don't mind being a bit colder Stockholm is absolutely beautiful.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/09/2017 20:25

Berlin Berlin Berlin Berlin Berlin

Or Prague

Or Edinburgh

Or London

But you should go to Berlin

SlugKiller · 14/09/2017 20:26

Madrid is great, lots of sightseeing, fab food and nice parks for lounging around in

superram · 14/09/2017 21:29

We went to Barcelona last year at the same time, it was great. Also love Rome, Seville, Stockholm, Amsterdam.

bananafanana1 · 15/09/2017 07:22

Bologna, good food and wine. Very grown up. Nice compact city.

pufflepup · 15/09/2017 07:24

Copenhagen, it's gorgeous. Also Stockholm and Oslo.

I wouldn't do either Rome or Barcelona these days, they are touristy in the extreme.

BikeRunSki · 15/09/2017 07:27

Berlin. I really want to go. We have fine a few city breaks with the dc (now 5 and 9) but I refuse to take them to Berlin because I have wanted to go for such s long time, I'll be frustrated by doing kid stuff rather than all me stuff.

BikeRunSki · 15/09/2017 07:28

Copenhagen is lovely. K can recommend a good, Central, ok price hotel if you choose there.

poppym12 · 15/09/2017 07:32

My next city trips with (hopefully) be Porto and Copenhagen. Never visited either before so I'm glad to see them both recommended.

TarquinsMama · 15/09/2017 09:50

Thanks for all the ideas - lots to research there - so excited now!!

Bordeaux. Beautiful city, easy to walk around, great food and excellent wine

purplecorkheart · 15/09/2017 09:56

Lisbon might also be worth looking into.

budgiegirl · 15/09/2017 14:33

I'd second Rome - my favourite place of all - it's stunning

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 15/09/2017 14:46

I third Rome - I'd never been until 2 weeks ago (I've lived all over) and thought it made an excellent city break city - yes, it's expensive, but beautiful, there's impressive historical stuff dotted around, and it's just... right.

AnnaT45 · 15/09/2017 14:48

Rome. It's so stunning and nice to just walk around. It's also impossible to have a bad meal there on any budget! Flights are reasonable too.

Enjoy the research and the break !
