Can any recommend a good tour company for the Golden Circle/day tours and give idea of what kind of prices to pay per person based on own experience and best way to transfer from airport etc or any other tours they'd recommend. We are there for 5 days, first visit, really don't want to hire a car, keen to see (even if cliche!) key sites to get a taster and would love to hear any other tips, suggestions to make most of our trip. Going in January, staying in self catering apartment. Thanks!

We did cruising excursions golden circle. It was £100 each, roughly. Everything there is really expensive. We went to a spa pool. Which cost about £40/person and that wasn't the blue lagoon which was even more.

Take snacks like cereal bars etc, so you do t need to buy too much food when you are out and about. Unless money isn't important...!

I've heard that if you want local wool wear, which is beautiful, it's worth looking in charity shops. The jumper I wanted was £350...

We did the tour 'Inside The Volcano' with Gray Line coaches. It was amazing! It took less than an hour to get there from Reykjavik centre and we then walked across lava fields to be winched down inside an extinct volcano. It was the experience of a lifetime!

That sounds amazing, Jarvis! I'd love to go back...

Just come back from Iceland. Very interesting, but our eyes are still watering from the prices; £8 for a pint of beer, £50 for a bottle of house plonk. Meals £50 for ordinary fare. Make sure you're feeling rich before you go there, because you won't be when you come back.

bumping! - we are going in April and I would love to hear any recent hints and tips please :)

We went earlier this year and had a great time. As others have said, prices are v high compared to the UK, even more so since exchange rate changes following EU ref. We ended up cooking at our Airbnb most nights, making packed lunches to take out with us, and eating a lot of service station hotdogs!

But despite the prices we had a great time. We did the Golden Circle and South Coast tours with GeoIceland Tours - really enjoyed both. We also went to Snaefellsnes - we took a hire car and stayed overnight but I think you can go on an organised day tour (but long day!)

No northern lights while we were there but stunning scenery more than made up for it.

Just saw you are going in January. Lots of roads close around that time of year, so you'll be more limited in where you can go (we went in summer). But you'll have lots of fun ice/snow activities to choose from, which we didn't!

Have fun - I really enjoyed Iceland and would love to go back.

We booked our tours when out there. The Blue Lagoon is worth a trip but take a swimming hat as the minerals in the water turn your hair to complete straw! We went pony trekking which was fun - recommend that along with whale watching. There are some heated public pools in Reykjavick which you can get a bus too which are ok. Take very warm clothes as it does live up to its name and it can be really unpleasant walking around. It's criminally expensive to eat out (though Chinese seemed to be cheap for some reason!) so if you've not booked a hotel, self catering AirBNB may be a good money saving option.

I went over Christmas last year on my honeymoon. Astronomically expensive. Best trip was the golden circle which was about £100 each. Did the Secret Lagoon instead of Blue lagoon - it was cheaper and pretty cool as we went on Christmas day. They were pretty much all we could afford what with paying for meals but we did do the hop-on hop-off bus thing one day which was fun. I would take lots of snacks to try to save on food!

You can pre book the airport bus online or buy tickets on arrival. Buses are waiting to meet flights. One company takes you to your hotel and as far as I remember the other one stops at the bus station.

We also did the inside the volcano trip and would recommend but when we went about three years ago, it was only available in the summer months so may not be available in January for OP.

Was lucky enough to go again in winter and did a trip to an ice cave which was also brilliant. I can’t remember which company we went with or how much - sorry!
