Thinking of going there during the Easter holidays with my ds (7) and dd(5).
Not sure whether it is better suited to older children -would be grateful for advice. Thanks.

Haven't been for years but my nephews of 4 and 7 would love it. 7 year old is quite into history though.

FrannyandZooey · 03/04/2007 20:54

I once played Oberon there. HTH

We took ds when he was 3 and he still loved it - just somewhere you can run, and run, and run...
It is a wonderful place Would go back like a shot but it is a long haul for the day from our bit of London

HopeIGetSomeMegaEggs · 03/04/2007 20:56

I have recommended it on Mumsnet Local - is good in holidays they do lot's of activities. We are going on Thurs.

DS remembers the latrine in the farmhouse to this day, and the kind volunteer who got him some dock leaves when he ran into a stand of nettles (townie boy )

sunnysideup · 03/04/2007 21:12

Definitely go, it's a lovely day out.
My ds has loved it since he was about 3, so I think your DC's will be the right ages to make the most of it. they usually have organised holiday type craft activities.

V expensive though.

I LOVE this place. Book a whole day there. Go early. There's so much to do. We are regulars but I haven't been for a while.

I'll look our for you.

MintChocChippyMinton · 03/04/2007 21:15

do they still have the charcoal burners camp in the woods? LOL at the latrines, I remember them from a school visit, must've been at least 30 years ago . Was the farmhouse called 'Bayleaf'?

sunnysideup · 03/04/2007 21:15

ooh yes go early, that's good advice in the holidays. Gets very busy indeed. Think it opens at 10?

I want to go this week now! but ds down with bug....don't think he'd cope. Oh well, maybe next week.

Tis a good place.

Spidermama · 03/04/2007 21:17

Yes I like the charcoal burners camp. It's still there. So life like.

They also have great indoor hands on building equipment. My kids have learned all about construction and building roofs etc.

They have pigs too and a mill where you can see wheat being milled into flour.

AlienEars · 03/04/2007 21:52

We're members and go regularly - lovely open spaces and always lots to look at. There are special events over the Easter weekend.

ArcticRoll · 04/04/2007 16:56

Thanks for all your replies.
We went there today and had a great time.
It's in such a beautiful setting. My children really enjoyed it and loved having a go at tiling a roof and constructing a timber frame model house.
They loved running around the wide open spaces and my dd enjoyed seeing the Shire horses and Tamworth piglets.
A really lovely day out and much less frantic than Legoland etc!
