Bavaria - where to stay?

OooohHorlicks · 08/09/2017 17:21

I am trying to plan - the kids would like to go to Germany next year and I'd really like to show them around Bavaria. I'm struggling to find self-catering options though. It's maybe not the done thing over there? Would prefer it to a Kinderhotel really. Looking at Chiemsee area, maybe Lake Constance.

Has anyone stayed anywhere that they would recommend?

I'm looking for this too. The self catering I have found looks sinister (lots of brown).

Dawnedlightly · 08/09/2017 17:25

I've never stayed in a Kinderhotel, but there was a very funny thread earlier this summer. Book very carefully.
How are you getting there and would you camp?

Bavaria - where to stay?
FaFoutis · 08/09/2017 17:30

I'm driving and refuse to camp. Have camped on Constance in the past and the sites are packed out in summer.

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 08/09/2017 17:52

How about Titisee? You could fly into Basel Mulhouse and get a car on the French side of the airport (its shared with France, Germany and Switzerland).

The lake is nicely sized and you can visit the surrounding area easily. There's also the option of Europa park for the kids for a day?

OooohHorlicks · 08/09/2017 17:52

Oooh no camping for me no no no. Probably driving yes. You're right about the brown FaFoutis.

I've never stayed in a Europa park. I'll look it up, thank you. I'm wondering if booking a little house for a week just isn't the done thing?

I haven't stayed there but did go to Munich where they do a train up into the Bavarian Alps.( Takes about an hour) we visited a place called tergensee.. it was beautiful and you could easily access other small towns and wahlberg mountain.. it's also based around a large lake. I'd love to go again in summer to see what it looks like without lots of snow.

OooohHorlicks · 08/09/2017 17:59

Yes actually Kelp Tegernsee was another place that was recommended. Apparently nice also for cycling around. But where does everyone stay??? Hotels? B&Bs?

OP posts:
Ineedmorelemonpledge · 09/09/2017 07:54

There are loads of hotels and places around Titisee.

Europa Park is a theme park, not a hotel chain. But they do have 5 theme hotels there to stay if you are visiting the park.

MrsGB2225 · 09/09/2017 07:56

You could do Munich > Lake Constance > europa park > the Black Forest

tomatotornado · 09/09/2017 08:00

Europa park times a billion. It's an amazing place. You can't just go and stay and not do the theme park though. I mean you could, but that would be a bit miserable Grin

Much easier to give them a call than deal online, often it says sold out when it isn't.

allegretto · 09/09/2017 08:06

We stayed here and it was amazing:
www.bischofschloss.de

It's a hotel but it has suites with kitchenettes. I booked it last minute and had no idea about the location but it was well-positioned for exploring the north side of the lake - you need a car though.

Clembarrass · 09/09/2017 08:14

Have you tried searching German websites for self catering? You might have more luck that way.

Try typing FeWo Bodensee/Schliersee etc and I'm sure plenty will come up. You might have to use google translate to see what the pages actually say (unless you can understand a bit of German) but you might find lots of sites are actually in English as well.

Igneococcus · 09/09/2017 08:27

Do you want to do mainly the South (Munich, alps, the lakes), which is what most people mean when they say Bavaria or go North as well, to Frankonia (Nuernberg, Wuerzburg, Bayreuth, Rothenburg)?
The Black Forest is not in Bavaria, the Bayrischer Wald in the East, towards the Czech border is lovely too.

itsmehello · 09/09/2017 08:48

Have a look here: www.tourismus.prien.de/en/booking/accommodation.htm
Alternatively check the tourist information in Fuessen or Berchtesgaden.
I found them very helpful looking for self catering. If you need an hotel ask www.ato-tours.com , they've got bags of knowledge about Bavaria.

NotCitrus · 09/09/2017 09:12

How many people? We did sc in Landsberg which I highly recommend as it's stunning and has the swimming park island (Inselbad), and can drive to Ammersee, Hochschwanstein etc.
Did find very little sc for more than 4 people anywhere within distance of public transport, but if you are OK driving from the airport then there was a lot in villages east of Munich, getting cheap towards the Czech border.

MrsGB2225 · 09/09/2017 09:14

The Black Forest isn't Bavaria but it's gorgeous and you call fly home from Basel Mulhouse. I'm probably biased though because my husband is from there Grin

Igneococcus · 09/09/2017 09:33

I agree that the Black Forest is gorgeous and worth a visit but it's right at the Western edge of Germany and it wouldn't be a great base if you want to see Munich and the area around.
I love Starnberger and Ammersee (with a walk to Kloster Andechs for a beer or two) and Koenigssee as well.

How about a holiday on a farm:

OooohHorlicks · 09/09/2017 20:27

Oh goodness, I've only just checked this today and so many new suggestions. How fab!! Thank you!! Yes Ammersee I have been to and remember.

There are 4 (possibly 5) of us. I have been looking on FeWo but I just can't get a feel for anything on there, I don't know what it is.

I really like Bischofschloss Allegretto - I might give them a call, thank you!! I will definitely also check out Europa Park.

Yes the other problem I have is that I want to cover so much. I love Nurnberg, I want the kids to see the various lakes, I want them to see Neuschwanstein and I want to go to the theme park.

Lots to work with now, thank you!!!

We are just back from a farm holiday, but in Austria, flew to Munich and drove down. There seemed to be loads of farms with Ferienwohnungen, I saw lots of them in Bavaria when looking for ours. We have booked one in the Black Forest for next year, planning to fly to Stuttgart...they are a great type of holiday with kids.

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 11/09/2017 07:22

If you want a theme park nearer those places then try Tripsdrill.

We stay in their tree houses every year. They are so fantastic.

noramum · 11/09/2017 09:54

Keep in mind that August is school holiday time in Bavaria (they break end July/beginning August) so it will be busy and Bavaria is also a prime holiday region for the rest of Germany who also will be having time of school. It can be difficult finding accommodation if you leave it late. I booked our holiday for this year last year August and had some difficulties.

Farm holiday is very popular and great for children, we did it several times in the last years. Most children are primary school age, so up to 10 I would say. You often get good facilities with washing machine/dryer, a pool, toys and games.

Otherwise you may need to stick to one area otherwise you spend far too much time in the car. You can get a good train from Munich to Nurnberg for a long day out if you are in the Munich area.

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 30/12/2018 19:45

@OoooHorlicks

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 30/12/2018 19:48
