1500-1800 ?
Next summer, 10 days ish can only do first 2 weeks in August.
3 kids inc teens and we've never taken them abroad for many reasons.
I'm going to try and save hard as they are desperate to go then book last minute in July for August.
Is that a realistic plan?

What type of holiday are you looking at op? Are you planning on staying in a hotel or are you open to something cheaper like camping? It's the flights that hike the prices up in August so it might be worth your while looking into eurotunnel or taking the ferry.
Most of the holiday packages I looked at in Spain for August this year were £3,000+
Not saying it can't be done though. Air b&b also have some great bargains so worth looking there.

I think if you are can drive and use a ferry for crossings Something like Eurocamp can be doable with 3 dcs sharing a bedroom in a 2 bed mobile home. Book early though alternatively if you are prepared to go to Turkey, Egypt or Tunisia there are some great bargains to be had.

timeismovingon · 06/09/2017 18:08

Possibly OP. You can leave it late and get a bargain but maybe if you book flights early when they are released and go self catering maybe in an appartment you can secure a deal. Some resorts have a lot of appartments/space available and prices are lower, additionally somtimes there are offers on e.g booking additional weeks cheaper.

We looked at going AI this summer and I was shocked at the prices, even last minute. Turkey was a lot cheaper though. With things getting squeezed it's going to be interestting to see what happens to prices next year and europe is now, imo, very overpriced.

If that's your all-in cost inc. travel, accommodation, food and extras then I think you'll need to drive/ferry/Eurotunnel and do some form of camping. Check out the prices for Eurocamp, Keycamp, Siblu, etc, but if you take your own tent then you might manage two weeks on that budget. I can't imagine that you'll get flights, hotel and food for five people for that price in August, but it's worth going and chatting to a travel agent to make sure. However, if I were you I'd assume camping and see if you can get a nice campsite with pool, bar, kids activities, etc on site.

And yes, driving and SC apartment you might manage too, but I'd assume one week rather than two for that option.

We have managed on a similar budget in school hols last few years. We dont book last minute though. We book Easyjet, hand luggage only (no weight limit but dimensional limit) as soon as flights come out. Typically we pay under £30 each way with seat reservations. Accomodation is typically £50 - £100/ nt for something 3/4 bed with reasonable facilities. The change in the Euro exchange rate and inflation has ment that the amazing house near Copenhagen we stayed in with swimming lake at the bottom of the garden was about £700 is now over £1000. Airports are now giving less than 1euro to the pound.

We self cater generally air bnb/ homeaway/ bungaloo. We like somewhere spacious with wifi.

Without car hire we've been to Venice, Prague, Berlin, Vienna, Geneva and Chamonix (flew Geneva and easybus to Chamonix flight plus bus around £45 each way) with hire cars Iceland and Denmark. We went to Iceland again this year and found it prohibitively expensive this time so it'd no longer be on my recomendation list. Denmark was wonderful and different. Car hire for a really nice from airport car was around £20/ day so a great price.

Lots of Northern Europe August is mid or even low rather than peek season so getting cheaper.

If you can do flights for around £300, accomodation for £500 (£50/nt) £200 transfers then its food and activities left to budget for. I tend to budget £80 - £100/ day. A simple activity like swimming for 5 can easily be £40, a quick drink after and then food and the days budget is gone. Theme parks could easily be £200 for a day. So looking for accomodation that has activities that are affordable, or on a site with stuff included can be worth factoring in when choosing your accomodation budget.

Its doable if you really budget but spreading the budget over 7 nts rather than 10 might give you just a bit more money to enjoy your holiday

Have you factored in passport costs, insurance etc?

DjangoUnchained · 06/09/2017 19:06

That'll be tight for two weeks in August with 3 teens.

One week might be do able. I'd start by booking cheap flights and then find accommodation through air b &ib or similar.

You could probably do eurocamp in south of France, getting ferry to Calais and driving for roughly that. We did it last year and the travelling (ferry, tolls, petrol) came to about £300. Cheap overnight stops were about £150, and ten days at eurocamp were about £1100 I think.

We've done Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Spain and Sweden in the summer over that last few years all for a lot less than your budget

France - we tend to ferry from south east then rent a villa with a pool for two weeks.

Germany/Belgium/Netherlands have both done Newcastle and south east ferries then either CP or hotels.

Sweden - flew to CPH then rented a car and a house with pool in Sweden for two weeks. All for about a grand including hotel in Copenhagen for two nights

Spain - flew, rented villa with pool of seek and sell on facebook - two weeks end of August flying from Glasgow. Less than a grand included hire car

All for 4 people and mostly self catering which suits us

Tips book as local as possible. If flying at the end of August look at Scottish airports.

Look at school holidays in country you're going to if we'd gone to Sweden the week before the villa would have been twice the price

Avoid tour operators.

wow somewhereovertherain - would love to know which sites etc you used for your Sweden deal - that's incredible!
