What to buy in a French supermarket?

I'm travelling back to the UK from our summer holiday (sob) tomorrow and going to go via Citi Europe in Calais. I'll have a crisp hour to shop: what should I prioritise buying (aside from the booze and cheese Smile)? What should I get to achieve French women chicness - is there a magic anti-cellulite potion I should know about?

Should say I'm already prioritising chocolate. That'll help with the war on cellulite for sure.

I bought nice baby things as gifts for people who were expecting, last time we went. Even the babies are chic in France it seems.

My children were very much taken with the champagne for children with apples in, avec alcohol. You could also sample all the pate at the deli.

Wine, don't bother taking up space with anything else Grin
Seriously it's so much better value in France!
Only get cheese if you have a cool bag and can stand the stink on the journey.
Bonne Maman madeleines.
I can't think of anything else, I prefer English products Blush

Confit de canard

Salted caramel in jars to have with pancakes, le petit marseillais does nice inexpensive hand cream and body cream etc, crème de pruneaux (also for pancakes!). Biscuits! Yes to mustard. Saucisson. Stationery for back to school. Can't really help on the chicness unfortunately...

can't advise on chic but we bought merguez sausages last time and they were so good!

for the cheese> maybe get a cooler bag and some ice.

even a proper baguette and cold cuts to have a ready meal when you arrive home. unless you are craving a fish and chip takeaway Grin

rillette. ah, food for the gods.

The Carrefour at Cite Europe is brilliant!!! Easy shops are mi-forte mustard, le Petit Marseillais shower gel, fleur de sel, confiture de lait (a delicious caramel spread). Terrines and pate de campagne are also easy to take back and look at the sirops, they now do lots of sugar free. Carrefour is very big into eco at the moment so you'll find lots of Fairtrade and organic options too. The store has a decent clothes section and all the rentree stationery will be out so loads of lovely paper and pens. Any brand of Savon de Marseilles soap is worth taking home.

The nicest kids champagne is Champomy, wine-wise you can get reasonable fizz from €3.50, Charles Volner is very often on offer. If you want a reliable brand for lots of cheaper wines, La Cave de Augustin Florent is one to look for.

If you get time, there are some great shops in the rest of the centre, I love the Sephora - it's downstairs from Carrefour and there's a Nature et Decouvertes shop nearby which has really interesting kids stuff.

You are all marvellous, merci!

Don't like it myself, but had to bring back a lot of the peach ice tea syrup (Teisseire) for fans. Big yes to all the Petit Marseillais. Also worth keeping an eye out for crème de pamplemousse rose (pink grapefruit) if you like the flavour - cheap and great in cava etc :) The veal stock is a great flavour without being as "specific" as beef -can use it in chicken dishes etc too
