Iceland in October- hints, tips and ideas needed!

We (DH, DCs 6 and 13 and myself) are off to Iceland in the October half term.
We are staying in Reykjavik, and have hired a car for most of the time there, with the intention of using this to travel out to various places- am thinking this would be easier on the youngest DC.
There has been some talk of maybe travelling south and spending one night there before returning to Reykjavik.
Has anyone been in October? What was the weather like? What we will we need? Have held off buying boots for the children as was worried their feet would grow- but now am thinking I'd better get some so they can wear them in!
Any other good advice would be much appreciated- I have accepted the cost of food and drink but am starting to worry about clothing, I can't work out if I should be more concerned about snow or rain!

A friend of mine did just that last October.

I don't know if it's against the rules to mention her blog? But she has a Facebook page called Guide My Tribe.

I really, really want to go! And October would be perfect for us, just not this year as my kids have different half terms 😬

Bumping as about to go and trawl the high street for walking boots!

We went in February and stayed near Selfos in AirBnB and hired a car etc. Be aware distances are big - the furthest we went was Vik. The roads will be fine - there was a lot of snow when we were there but they were all clear - no idea if there is snow in October.

Vik is great and there are a couple of cool waterfalls on route - Seljandafoss (not sure if spelling) and another whose name escapes me. Go to the golden circle- Gulfoss and Geyser - Kerid Crater also worth a trip. We went to the Blue Lagoon and enjoyed it - I think the secret is to accept that it is a tourist magnet, go in morning and book in advance.

Wind can be a problem in Iceland and really reduce temp but I imagine Oct is still relatively mild.

If there is a lot of snow / ice you can buy these little slip on things which go over your boots with spikes - they were about £5 from Amazon. We didn't wear ski things or anything. It will be much milder when you're there.

Reykjavik is fab - trendy Scandinavian city - dress as you would any capital city. Tge cathedral is spectacular. Supermarket quite pricey, restaurants fab (pricey).

We all loved Iceland and plan a return trip in the summer to see other side of island.

Second the golden circle - we had an amazing day. half a day for the blue lagoon - another not to be missed experience and we also went Whale watching. Such a beautiful country - we went pre kids but would love to go again and take them.

So I don't need to dress the children in a load of base layers? Do you think warm waterproof coats will be fine?
What do we wear on our feet? I am used to winter here, but have got it into my head we need to be dressed somewhere along the lines of Scott of the Antarctic!

The average temp for Oct is between 3 and 7 degrees so I think you'll be fine 😀
