Weekend in Amsterdam with DC

Has anyone been to Amsterdam with DC?

So far we have decided to visit the Anne Frank Museum, Vondelpark, do a canal trip (not sure which one though) and the Van Gough museum (DC2 a keen artist). We are not massively keen museum goers, but happy to add on another if someone thinks it is a must see.

I would also like to do a bit of clothes and shoe shopping preferably in local boutiques or designers. Any suggestions?

I's also welcome any recommendations for restaurants or cafes. My DC don't need a child friendly menu and we would like to try local cuisine.

Bitterballen From FEBO will be fun. The Rijksmuseum is on Museum Square and is brilliant, Nightwatchmen.

The restaurant, De Kaas, is near the zoo, great place for lunch. No menu, set price, all fresh produce. restaurantdekas.nl/home

Anne Frank tickets can only be bought directly from the Anne Frank House website, months/weeks in advance and booked at a specific time slot. Then print off your booking/ mobile device & queue. The West Church is next door, good to climb the spire to take in the views. The brown café T'Smalle is nearby too for a beer, snack & good to watch life go by.

Get to Anne Frank first thing, the queues are huge, we went there first and then had breakfast!

Thanks for all the suggestions and links.
I already have tickets for Anne Frank House first thing on day 2. Our hotel is 5 mins walk and I will check out the church next door too.

We took ours in February and had the most amazing time. It's the perfect city to take kids to. We hired bikes which was a real highlight, it's very easy to ride around and if your children are too small for their own bikes you can put them on the back.

BanyanTree · 31/08/2017 12:02

Which bits did you particularly enjoy ujer?

My kids absolutely loved the Van Gogh museum because they have a childrens' guided audio tour which I did with them whilst DH and the eldest did the adults one and there was a good playground outside. They really enjoyed that. They loved Anne Frank and were absolutely fascinated with all the history of the building, they loved riding bikes, they loved the tram. We did a bit of shopping and they found a load of quite quirky music shops to browse in. I think that they liked that it was generally very easy to get around and they were totally in to the bike thing. We also went to a great Pancake house but I'm afraid I have no idea what it was called and they loved that too. Just a very easy city break with kids.

www.amsterdam.info/museums/museum_lordattic/ My DH and I loved this - it's quirky and not too busy.

Thank you. Glad you had a good time.

Did anyone buy an iamsterdam card and find them useful?

Absolutely must go on the canal boat for an essential yet relaxing tour! We got on right outside Anne Frank House.

Another vote for Rijksmuseum. You could just do their art garden. Children spent ages jumping around in the water feature. At that time they also had the huge *IAM*STERDAM letter sculpture (but I think it gets moved around? ) which was fun to climb and made for great photos.

We loved our weekend there and want ro go again!

We're just back from a holiday in Holland and had a day in Amsterdam. Not nearly long enough to see everything we wanted to, but we went to Anne Frank's house and also did a canal trip (both were great). I'd also have loved to go to the Rijksmuseum, and the Nemo science museum is meant to be brilliant (it looked great from the outside). Will definitely have to go back some day....

We got back yesterday from a holiday around The Netherlands and Belgium including 3 days in Amsterdam. Our best bits were:

  • Anne Frank museum
  • Van Gough museum
  • VondelPark (you can hire bikes outside the entrance or just explore on foot)
  • Rembrandtplein (life size statues of the Night Watch)
  • The area behind the Rijksmuseum (fountains, I Amsterdam sign, modern art sculptures)
  • Nemo ( we only went on the roof but there is fab views, water play and a cafe)
  • Wandering around the canals
  • Begijnhof (beautiful and quiet square which contains the oldest house in Amsterdam)
  • The ground floor of the bibliotheque if you have young children - 6yr DD loved the Mouse Mansion

Hi we just got back from a surprise holiday trip to Amsterdam. Having done the usual things Ato-Tours recommended us a trip to Amsterdam Noord. It's a quirky area easily reachable from the central station by taking a free ferry. Art galleries, loads of street art, cool restaurants and cafes and surprisingly an old dutch village too. Really cool!

We're planning to go in February with DSs aged 9 and 12. Can anyone recommend a good hotel?
