Anyone been to Lapland without kids? (and not paid a fortune?)

I'm really interested in going to Lapland but not for the Christmas stuff. I want to try out husky sledding, and seeing the Northern lights, snowmobiling, sauna etc. I would probably go Feb/March time.

I've had a look online and I really can't see a cheap(ish) way of doing this without going on a package trip which is also insanely expensive. I would personally rather go self catering and sort everything out myself but even that costs a bomb. The husky stuff looks like it's £200 on its own.

Also, and this might be my poor research skills, but all the flights from the north of England (where I would go from) involve very lengthy stop overs, meaning they can take up to 20 hours.

Am I missing something or is this just what things cost and the time it takes?

Best and cheapest flights look to be from Manchester - if that's north enough. We fly to Kittilä via Helsinki which is fine. 15 mins in a taxi takes you to Levi which is a lovely small town with plenty of activities to try. They have downhill skiing and cross country plus all the winter experiences. We have always found it cheapest to book through the local tourist information centre. Take at look at www.levi.fi - you can translate it to English. Lots of accommodation on there plus all experiences to book. Very cold and dark until mid February - but higher chance of northern lights. Lots of activities flood lit so plenty still goes on. Hope this helps.
