Sorrento with DC 4 and 1

We've been invited to a wedding in Sorrento. Yay. Not had any foreign holidays since a babymoon before DD, a little over 4 years ago.

I've done a bit of googling and I'm not convinced Sorrento is the place to stay for a week+ though.

It sounds really silly but I'm trying to imagine what the two children will do on holiday. It's for next spring, so youngest is still a small baby which doesn't help.

We're going to find an airbnb to stay in, can't afford a hotel (a quick look indicates this week be 2K+ for the week vs 700ish for a flat.

We probably want to spend a few days at a beach, visit parks and maybe a zoo / aquarium / animal things if possible, also visit other child friendly things. I'm not sure what!

Would Sorrento be any good with its small beaches in the city? Or should we base ourselves elsewhere, maybe Ischia? And travel over for the wedding?

Any thoughts much appreciated

There aren't really any sandy beaches or zoos etc in Sorrento. The beaches are very small and along by the Marina Grande (nice spot for a stroll, lunch/gelato and view though). Tbh the coastline along there is more rugged than child friendly. You could look at an agriturismo, I think there is at least one in the hills behind and they tend to be family friendly with some activities on site.

I stayed in Sorrento for a week pre-dc and found it quite boring, went to the town a couple of times but there's not much there. Didn't like the beach. Spent a lot of time reading by the hotel pool. You will definitely need to travel further afield to keep young ones entertained.

Thanks metal, that's what I suspected.
The wedding couple also have two similarly agreed children, I'm not sure what they're thinking tbh. I can only guess they've got all excited about the idea of a wedding in swanky sorrento and not considered much else.

I'm currently thinking of going to Sorrento for a day or two before the wedding, then heading to the other sandier (? I need to check it is!) coast for a holiday.

Have a look at sant agnello nearby, it's much quieter and you can walk to sorrento and the marinella from there. I wouldn't spend a week there with kids though - very little for them.

Lizs I hadn't heard about agriturismo before, it sounds ideal. Huge thanks

Or go to the wedding and then travel further down for a few days - Agropoli and acciaroli both have good sandy beaches and child friendly restaurants.

Castellabate is lovely but a bit further.

Paestum area has a nice beach, the temples and lots of holiday type places. Less picturesque inland though (polytunnel farms a go go!).

All these areas have lots and lots of lovely agriturismos.

Perfect underpar - this is exactly the sort of info I want! I think sorrento the wedding then travel a bit further to stay sounds like the ideal solution

Sorry - It was Palinuro i meant that was even further (I think castellabate is nice too but can't remember much about it...!)

"Have a look at sant agnello nearby, it's much quieter and you can walk to sorrento and the marinella from there"

We stayed in Sant Agnello, and the walk along the narrow pavement next to a horrifically busy road is not something I would recommend with small children.

I agree that the Sorrento area is not a great idea for families with small children. The main visitor attractions are Pompeii (definitely no pushchairs), Herculaneum and Vesuvius, none of which I think would appeal to small children.
