Is it possible to do a 2 week holiday with just hand luggage.

DH booked the flights. He hasn't booked any hold luggage.

There are 4 of us and we can take one piece of hand luggage each with no weight limit. So one of those tiny cases.

I'm really tempted to call his bluff.

Yes. Especially when there is no weight limit.

titchy · 15/08/2017 22:55

Assuming you're going somewhere hot yes of course! Flip flops, two swimming costumes, seven t shirts, two shorts, 14 knickers, sarong. Job done.

If you're trekking to Everest Base Camp though you might be in trouble...

catweasel44 · 15/08/2017 22:58

Well I'll be fine but DH does love a pair of brogues and a hard back book!

Yes, I just did ten days with hand luggage, I also took 8 books and my laptop! you can always add on hold luggage if you want to though.

GrockleBocs · 15/08/2017 23:00

DH has size 12 feet so struggles to travel with any shoes other than flip flops as hand luggage. If this is the situation with your DH then stick with hand luggage Grin

ASauvingnonADay · 15/08/2017 23:02

Definitely! Use the rolling technique, and stuff pants/socks/small bits into shoes etc.

LancashireTea · 15/08/2017 23:05

I have twice "backpacked" for a month with only hand luggage. Bought a fab travel towel and did do washes when away, but packed minimally.

Wish I was that minimal these days!

RapidStreaming · 15/08/2017 23:06

Definately no problem if you are going on a sunshine / hot / beach type holiday. Especially so if no weight limit! Just remember buy shampoo / suncream etc there because of security checking.

SummerKelly · 15/08/2017 23:07

Yes we did 3 weeks, half city and half beach. And still probably didn't wear everything we took.

smogsville · 15/08/2017 23:13

Assuming it's a lazy swim/ lie in sun holiday with no kids and you have a kindle, defo. We've done a week rather than two, but I didn't wear half the stuff. If there's a washing machine where you're staying it's a no brainer. And you won't have to wait for your luggage/ worry about it getting lost.

catweasel44 · 15/08/2017 23:16

I didn't think about toiletries. That could slow us down a bit.

The kids will be fine. They just wear swimming trunks all week.

Yes. Easily. You have to be ruthless. Only take clothes which mix and match with everything else in the case. Wear shoes, pack sandals or flip flops.
I can't remember the last time I had luggage in the hold. Even before the budget airlines it was quicker and more convenient not to.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 15/08/2017 23:19

Definitely. I've just got 10 days worth of clothes into a small bag about 2/3 the size of a carry on, including lots of thick heavy stuff (camping), so you can easily do it if you're going somewhere warm. Roll everything.

BaronessBomburst · 15/08/2017 23:21

You can take a few mini toiletries for the first day or two, then buy cheapy bottles of shampoo etc in the supermarket for you all to share.

namechangedtoday15 · 15/08/2017 23:22

Yes, never do hold luggage. Did a week skiing with 3 children, just carry on hand luggage and a week this year in Italy for a family wedding (so including wedding outfits - suits, dresses, shoes etc) with just hand luggage. Am yet to use a washing machine or do washing, so it's just about clever packing.

Soft holdalls / cases are much better than the rigid small cases.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/08/2017 23:29

You can buy toiletries once you are through security. I have read on here that sometimes they can be more expensive abroad.

TestTubeTeen · 16/08/2017 00:01

The miniature travel shampoo and conditioner is more than you need for 2 weeks.

northcoastmum · 16/08/2017 00:05

We've done hand luggage only for a few years, probably since our youngest was about 3/4. The key is to use large/flexible hand luggage, we have a couple of Cabin Max backpacks, a 'Weekender' hold-all and a couple of smallish suitcases. All have compartments and we tend to designate one as the 'devices and liquids' bag to make going through security easier.

MsGameandWatching · 16/08/2017 00:07

We have done. It was doable but I wouldn't do it again. Was a pain having to consider everything we bought. Had to buy a case to come back with in the end.

biscuit

Depends which bit of Forn Parts you are going to, I suppose. hmm

Backinthebox · 16/08/2017 00:13

Smilie fail! Grin

HeddaGarbled · 16/08/2017 00:14

Two pairs of shorts for a fortnight when it's hot? This makes me think my fanny must be more smelly than the norm Hmm

CrowyMcCrowFace · 16/08/2017 00:28

Helps if you embrace your inner goth.

I pack long tube skirt, jeans, shorts, 2 vests, 2 tshirts, 2 long sleeve tops, shrug/cardigan. All black. Sorted.

Add underwear, swimsuit, sandals, swim shoes. Travel in sturdier shoes.

Rely on hotel toiletries or buy when you get there.

IAmALeafOnTheWindWatchHowISoar · 16/08/2017 02:16

We spent 10 weeks in Sri Lanka last year with only taking hand luggage and we were touring around. It's perfectly do-able.

CatchingBabies · 16/08/2017 02:22

Not done 2 weeks but we've been for a week, 2 adults and 3 children with just hand luggage. One case each, wore down the clothes that took up the most room, rolled everything up and bought mini toiletries. It was fine and we had plenty.
