6 days in New York - help me with an itinerary please

We're going for Easter next year with two teenage DDs (mid-teens).

I haven't been for 25 years. Most of our holidays involve getting up late and chilling by a pool/the beach with a few watersports or a mooch round a village after lunch, so this is very different and I don't want to waste it, so I'm thinking an itinerary would be good.

Can you give me some ideas of 'must do's' re: sightsteeing etc and also where to eat. It's DH birthday whilst we're there so a plan for that would be good.

Take one day and visit Albany which is the capitol of NY.
Take Amtrak from Penn Station to Albany, tour the capitol building etc. Albany is a beautiful place.

Also whilst in NY visit Gracie's Mansion, that where the Mayor lives.
You an find information visiting times etc online.

Archibald Gracie Mansion is the official residence of the Mayor of the City of New York. Built in 1799, it is located in Carl Schurz Park, at East End Avenue and 88th Street in the Yorkville neighborhood of Manhattan

Didn´t know about this attraction until I was told about it by a friend. The ride provides nice views of Manhattan East Side with UNESCO building, Chrysler building and many more. Although the car was crowded we enjoyed the alternative way of transportation. MTA MetroCard only is accepted to pay the ride. If you own a 7-day-unlimited card no additional costs will squeeze you out when you´re on a budget, otherwise prices per ride are still reasonable.

Take the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island, it's free and a really nice ride. There a trail to walk around the island, promised myself to do so one day.
