Eurocamp or city break with young kids?

Please give me some advise/experience on what would work best for us. We've been discussing this for ages and keep going back and forth on our decision.

We have two kids, they will be 5 and 3 next year when we go on holiday. Our first holiday away (so we want to get it right as we'll be saving for ages for this plus we're not sure what to expect)

We are looking to go to Nice next summer and originally looked at Eurocamp as we thought it would be great for the kids. No TV/wifi put us off a bit as we like to unwind once the kids are in bed quite early, then we looked into apartments in Nice itself. DH is pushing for this as he'd like us to be central so we can nosy around the city and it'll be easier for day trips to places - we don't drive so we won't be renting a car.

The apartments will have wifi but the TVs will only have English news so really that's pretty much voided that problem.

Is eurocamp really great for young kids? Are any near Nice perfect for that age or would a city centre base work better for us?

Please decide for us as we're obviously not capable of it and this holiday may never get booked!!

This is a lovely bit of the world! It's also pricey so maybe Eurocamp works out well if you are on a budget. I haven't done it though but I can't see why it wouldn't be great.
I am not a fan of Nice ( compared to other towns on the coast). The beach is grey and pebbley and the town is sprawling. However you might consider an apartment in Villefranche sur Mer. It's a 40€ cab fare from Nice or 10 mins direct on the bus for 6€ or similar on the train. You get a stunning village with lots of places to eat and drink and a fab little sandy beach. The train runs all the way along the coast so you can go down to Nice or Antibes or up the coast to Monte Carlo or even Ventamillia in Italy! Really convient and easy with children. Very easy to day a day trip everyday and come back for a bit of beach and food.

Split it. A short week in Eurocamp (Yes, if you pick one with the right facilities they are ace for kids) and a weekend in Nice on the way to the airport.

Euro camp is good for kids. Agree with ppl combine the two, city break in nice then euro camp nearby. They're very helpful if you call them they'll tell you the nearest ones to nice

TheweewitchRoz · 14/08/2017 09:56

Eurocamp is perfect for kids that age.

BicycleMadeForTwo · 14/08/2017 10:42

Thanks all!! I think that might be the best thing to do, four days at eurocamp and three in Nice itself. Or vice versa. Makes sense and would let us see what would work best for future holidays.

Will definitely check out Villefranche sur mer. Thanks for that.

I've just checked out the Eurocamps! They look lovely and as people say perfect for little ones.
Villefranche is an amazing base though. Very beautiful and it's all by the sea. Everything including mini mart, liars and resturants and beach is in easy walk, buggy friendly
Be careful ???it's really romantic if you weren't considering baby no.3.

BicycleMadeForTwo · 14/08/2017 14:23

Well that's stuck Villefranche straight into the no pile then. No more babies for me thanks very much 😂

The I'm assuming liars was an auto correct fail, but I can't work out what it was actually meant to be Confused Grin

Mary1935 · 14/08/2017 15:29

I think it's meant to be bars and restaurants.

HeadDreamer · 14/08/2017 16:58

I will choose city apartments. No wifi and TV will put me right off. You can get a chrome cast and use Netflix and a tablet. We had great fun doing day trips in cities. Look up zoos, amusement parks, that kind of thing and plan around that.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 14/08/2017 17:04

Erocamp is fantastic for kids that age. We've just come back from our second eurocamp type holiday with our two. You can download movies onto the kids' tablets for them to watch in the evening although they'll be exhausted anyway. Stay at a campsite near a city and you can do day trips.

BicycleMadeForTwo · 14/08/2017 17:19

That's the only problem with Nice and Eurocamp. All the Eurocamp locations (bar one and it doesn't look amazing) are quite far away, especially as we don't drive, so we weren't sure if it was going to be a lot of extra faff getting to one and then using it as a base for day trips. I think splitting the trip is probably the best way forward if we can choose a nice Eurocamp nearby.

DH is about to kill me as I've changed my mind a million times about this holiday but I just want to make sure it's the best it can be for all of us. I contemplated looking at other places we could fly into easy enough (flying from Ireland so the choice isn't as great as from mainland UK) but we thought Nice would be nice [no pun intended]

If you don't drive it's not an ideal solution no.

Heratnumber7 · 14/08/2017 18:16

Don't do Eurocamp if you don't drive. How would you get there even? Though its a fan holiday for adults and kids.
Forget about needing TV and WiFi. You and the kids will probably all go to bed at the same time Grin

You've picked one of the most expensive holiday destinations in Europe. Its cheaper if you go down the coast a bit towards Spain.

I really think a camping hol with no car is a non starter though.

HeadDreamer · 14/08/2017 18:44

I don't think I will stay anywhere without good transport unless I drive. Hence why I say city break with good kids activities in an apartment or air bnb. The guardian ran a series earlier this year for city breaks with kids. It's worth a look for inspiration.

HeadDreamer · 14/08/2017 18:47

I know it's not nice, but there is one for Nantes and another for Paris in the series.

NancyJoan · 14/08/2017 18:50

Themost, BOTH my kids conceived in Villefranche! Too scared to go back!

NancyJoan · 14/08/2017 18:51

OP, Nice/Villefranche is lovely, but VERY expensive. And boiling in high season.

BicycleMadeForTwo · 14/08/2017 19:53

I thought we would be ok with buses/trains etc for getting around, although to be fair I generally flit through books/websites picking things I would like to see and do and then let DH sort all the boring details like how to actually get to the things!

HeadDreamer that link is great. Will have a good read through that now.

We have Eurocamped twice with no car. Chose a site near the airport, and used one of their static caravans.

sepsisandAKI · 14/08/2017 21:16

Currently at camping fabulous in Italy. Great place. Has eurocamp too. 20 mins by public transport to Rome centre and airport. Great pool.

sepsisandAKI · 14/08/2017 21:16

And we haven't got a car or needed one

Themostannoyingperson · 14/08/2017 21:51

Villefranche and Nice are both iok price wise for food and drink though. It's only the hotels that are pricey and apartments and airbnb is reasonable. Public transport is cheap and having the beach and sea means there is a free and fun.

TheweewitchRoz · 14/08/2017 22:28

We do Eurocamp in Italy (Lake Garda) without a car. If flying from Dublin, fly to Verona or Milan & can easily get to Peschiera del Garda on public transport & then can do fantastic day trips as well as enjoying all the campsites have to offer (Bella Italia is fab, as is Camping Del Garda - both right on the lake).

Heratnumber7 · 15/08/2017 09:29

I thought we would be ok with buses/trains etc for getting around

We carry so much stuff with us on hol, there's no way we could travel on public transport!

Food, buckets and spades, rubber rings, toys, books, picnic stuff, beach bags, ice blocks, sleeping bags, pillows, wet weather gear, maps, guide books, blankets, beach mats, beach ball, indoor games, outdoor games......
