What can you tell me about Gran Canaria?

We've never been to the Canary Islands before and taking our first trip there at the very beginning of April 2018 for a week.

We are: me, DH, DS aged 6, DD aged 3 and DGM aged 80.

I have no idea what the weather will be like; thinking sunbathing weather(?) but wondering about the evenings.

Also what would you recommend for us all to do? We do plan on taking the children to the waterpark (DGM probably stay at the hotel or she may come and watch).

Staying in San Augustin (IFA Interclub Atlantic to be precise)

I'm not sure it will be lying in the sun weather at the start of April - quick google suggests 18 - 19 degrees.
I went to the Canaries for the first time in June, and it was beautiful, but almost always a fresh breeze (which suits me... it was around 26 - 28 degrees while we were there) but I'd have thought a bit nippy for sunbathing at start of April. The temperature in the evenings didn't drop much.

I went to Tenerife in early April this year and it was pretty warm, mid to high twenties.

When I went to Gran Canaria a few years back it was February and more like 20 degrees. A bit cooler but still shorts and tee shirts in the day. I would think April should be fine, definitely sunbathing weather!

Aah, I've stayed there a few times! The pool area is lovely.

should be fine, I've been in January and totally beach weather, came back with an even better tan than during the summer!! The evenings can be a bit cooler, just need a cardie. Love Gran Canaria, enjoy!

It can vary. We have been in April and had rain we have also been in February and had sunshine.

April should be warm and sunny but cool in the evening. You would also need a heated pool. I think it might be a bit cool for water park.

It's hot. Fun if you like cheesy beach holidays. Looks like surface of the moon, striking rather than pretty. Friendly people and everyone in towns speaks English. Maspolamas is lovely, Plays Ingles is a bit more cheesy. Sea is lovely temperature. Big on windsurfing. Carrefour is the bet supermarket in the world.

Thank you very much!

I certainly wasn't expecting summer temperatures but still 'expected' warmth and yes, I believe the swimming pool is heated up until we arrive so assume it will be still warm.

So I know to pack t shirts and shorts with maybe dresses/trousers and cardigans available for cooler evenings but still expect maybe cloud and a bit of rain? I do google temps but know that they always give the lower of the day temps as everytime we went to Turkey and Madeira googling temps always said it was a good 8 degrees cooler than what it is. I'd be happy with 24/25 TBH.

I don't think we'll visit Plays Ingles (or whatever it is). I can't see the MIL being up for much walking about.

I love the Canaries - have only been to Gran Canaria once and I wouldnt go back but only because I prefer it a bit quieter.
We stayed in Playa del Ingles and it was very cheesy I would avoid it! Iirc it was quite a party place, with a huge gay scene( i was there quite a long time ago).
Maspalomas is lovely and the beaches are great (maybe avoid the nudist beach withthe kids 😁). The scenery is stunning.
There is usually a nice breeze, the sea can be cold as it is the Atlantic but its refreshing rather than freezing.
Cocodrilo park was good when I was there, kids might enjoy that.

We stayed in Peurto Rico at the end of March/beginning of April last year and it was lovely weather, around 26 most days.
We did pool days, beach days and had a couple of trips out on a boat (dolphin watching and over to Mogan for a market day).
I would say watch out for the touts selling timeshares, and the shopkeepers trying to get you into there shops. They are friendly but you need to be firm if you dont want to go.
There is Angry Birds Land which was great for our young children and near to the main shopping centre of PR, had some lovely meals out.
I havent been to San Augustin so cant really help there. Have a lovely holiday.

Thanks again.

Reassuring to know that you can get temps of 26 at the beginning of April.

San Augustin is a very quiet resort (I am led to believe) and that is how we like it.

Boat trips are usually 'mandatory' on our holidays so hopefully we will find one but dolphin spotting sounds good - my youngest who will be 3 by then would be rather giddy!

Angry Birds Land sounds appealing to my DS who will be 6 when we travel so I will look into that.
