Morning I'm flying to Lisbon tomorrow, I love it there. Dh is Portuguese so I may be biased Wink

Rossio is a lovely area to stay in and there's the Elevador da Santa Justa that gives great views although it does get v busy. There's Avenida da Liberdade that is lovely to stroll down. My favourite place is Praça do Comércio, a beautiful square by the river. Also the Castelo do São Jorge is great for a wander around and gives great views. From memory the metro for that was Martim Moniz or something similar.

If you want any more info feel free to ask!

Oh and further along the coast is the monument at Belem and statue of the explorers. We got a tram and walked the rest I think. I've only been to that area once but I'm pretty sure there's a monastery or something down that way too.

Oh I love Lisbon. We've always stayed in Bairro Alto when we've gone - some fab bars around there.

No real tips other than you should definitely go and just have fun wandering and getting lost.

Oh yes, Bairro Alto does have good bars I hear... Dh had his stag do there and didn't get back til about 6 or 7 in the morning 🙈

Absolutely love Lisbon, been three times in the last couple of years, it just feels such a happy place.

Don't bother with a taxi from the airport if you are staying centrally in Lisbon, either take the Metro which is an easy trip with just one change, or the Aerobus (slightly more expensive) if you have lots of luggage.

Public transport in Lisbon is truly excellent - hop on and off buses and trams etc all day long. Use Citymapper, fantastic app and covers Lisbon.

Buy a Viva Viagem card for transport - in fact we always had two types, a 24 hour pass and a zapping pass as they offer slightly different options - information here Lisbon Guru - much better value than single tickets.

Take the ferry from Cais de Sodre to Cacilhas (10 min trip) and from there you can take a normal bus to the Cristo Rei monument - and go up in it if you don't mind heights for fabulous views over the river and Lisbon on the other side.

Also from Cacilhas there is a walk (turn right out of ferry port) along the river side (a bit seedy at times but busy and interesting) - there's a little restaurant about 20 mins walk away Ponto Final - fresh fish, excellent value sitting right on the riverside (it will splash you if you sit too close!) - one of the highlights of our last visits, this, and the back streets here are interesting to explore on foot if you go up the steep elevador just past the restaurant.

You will (as history/culture enthusiasts) definitely want to take the tram (15) to Belem - go to the Pastelaria de Belem for the famous custard tarts and coffee (don't queue at the door for takeaway, walk right in to the tables area - coffees and a plate of tarts cost under 10 euros, well depends on how moreish you find the tarts Wink - then walk to the Monasteiro (free entry on Sundays but we just admired it from outside) and the lovely little Torre de Belem, and the wonderful monument des Descobrimentos.

You may be fluent in Portuguese but if not, thank you is Obrigada (if female) and Obrigado (pron Obrigadoo) if male.

Lisbon is so small for a major city and highly walkable, but it IS very hilly, so use those trams and buses as much as poss (unless you're young and fit, unlike me Smile

Have a fabulous time Flowers

Wow thanks everyone, definitely don't speak Portuguese I'm afraid so thanks :)
is Belem and the explorers monument easy to get to does anyone know?
We are staying right near the centre at the top of a huge hill apparently 😂

Use the hop on/off buses or the tram, to get to Belem as the metro doesn't go that far

Mama1980 · 07/08/2017 16:49

Thanks :)

Belem is very easy to get to, yes. Just take the Number 15E tram (this tram isn't one of the 'old' type but more like a long yellow bus, and get off when you see the Monasteirio (unmissable) - it's about half an hour's journey from the tram's start (Praca da Figuera, one of the major squares you are sure to encounter). It's a very busy tram and they always warn you about pickpockets so hold your bag close to your body.

There's some stuff about it here 15 E to Belem

Belem is really nice and lots to see there - all walkable - mostly right along the riverfront.

Thanks am really excited now, All booked :)
