Thameslink free travel age!?

So my dd is 5 (almost 6) and very tall... I have been getting the train to my mum's for 3 years it's 2 stops. I have never paid for her to get the train apart from longer journeys like going to the sea side etc. Today a lady at the station tried to stop me from going through the barriers because she didn't have a ticket but my bright spark dd said I'm 4 I'm free! So she let us go through but wasn't happy. I've just looked online and said 5-10 travel free with paying adult... is this right I'm so confused. To be honest if I'm going to be charged to take her on the train it might seem more worth my while to start getting the bus. It just adds to the journey by 30+ minutes. Sorry about the rambly post. Tia for the advice x

I have read their website and once she turns 5 you will need to buy her a child' ticket. However, they also state that "But they can only sit in a seat if it's not needed by another passenger with a ticket".

Until she turns five her cost to travel is free.

The person at the station probably queried her age due to her height (I would actually carry a photocopy of her passport if she has one to show them).
