You are spoilt for choice restaurant wise.

Favourites for us are Baracuda on Rue Meybeyer. Just up from the front and one block along from the Negresco. The staff are really nice. They also have Koudou on the front and for a special treat the tasting menu there is amazing.

Booking in advance is needed for Oliviera (it's on rue du Collet in the old town). It's run by a husband and wife and they make their own olive oil and each course is designed around an accompanying oil, even if you don't eat there it's worth buying a bottle to take home, it's closed Monday's and Tuesday's. My favourite ever in Nice.

La Trattoria on the Rue de France is great for a pizza or pasta. It's also near the Negresco. We tend to avoid the other end of the Rue de France and the Cours Saleya as they are busy, not as good and more expensive.

We tried a lovely place this year which was on the street that runs up the side of the meridien. I think it was called La Massarena? It was on the left as your walked up from the sea.

A bus anywhere is €1.50 and you can pick up a 81 or 100 from the top end of the park which the fountains are in. It will take you to Villefranche which is a lovely village with a sandier beach than Nice. You can also get the train. It's much easier to get in and out the sea here. It can be quite choppy at Nice and the stones can be steep depending on the sea.

St Paul de Vence is worth a day trip depending who long you are there for. It's a gorgeous see town full of art galleries. I think it's the 400 bus to here but not sure.

Eze is nearby too and has fantastic views over the Med. You can get the train then a bus up the hill. Chateau Eze has a veranda overlooking the sea and while expensive (Michelin starred) it's nice as a special treat.

Where are you staying? It's a fab city and even if you stay within Nice itself there is lots to see. The old town is nice and shady during the day for coffee. The prom is very long and there are covered sections to stop and read your book. You can get a lift up the the old castle and the waterfall or there is a little train which takes you up.

@Strictlycooking thank you so much for all the tips and especially the places to eat. We are only there for three nights so should have three days to have a look around etc. We are staying at the Mercure Nice Centre Grimaldi. We saw lots of other nice hotels but it was a bit of a last minute booking and they were either a lot more expensive or didn't have double rooms available for our dates.

The negresco for a cocktail is a must. And go to the loos when you're there...... grasse is nice for a trip out - you can buy perfume.

Don't get in a taxi anywhere- they rip you off, get the airport bus into nice

Enjoy! X

Could you factor in a day at Monte Carlo ? The drive is stunning on its own and MC is unique . It was the highlight for me when we were in Nice .

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 05/08/2017 16:06

If you are only there for three days, I'd choose Eze over Grasse for a day trip, there is a fragonard museum at Eze and personally I don't find Grasse at all charming. (Perhaps because I live nearby and end up in Grasse often for administrative reasons!).

Nice has some lovely bars and restaurants around the Rue Bonaparte area.
La Rosalina is cute for a pre dinner drink and L'Usine is a lovey restaurânt.
Also love Deli Bo for brunch.

Enjoy strolling/getting lost around the old town/cours saleya.
Walk through the most fountains on place Massena and escape the heat with a good mooch around Galerie Lafayette!

Thanks @Speckledyhen I was just looking at Monte Carlo the other evening and it seems it's only 20 minutes on the train so might be worth a visit (how glamorous do I need to dress? Smile

Thanks @Briochebriochebrioche for your recommendations. I shall add them to my list.

We stayed in eze it was wonderful. Drove to nice and Monaco. Was lovely

fedupandnogin · 12/08/2017 15:23

Yes Eze looks lovely. So we are planning a train ride out to Monacco one day (and maybe stopping at Villefranche on the way back - I believe you can do that on the train?). Maybe Eze could be another day? What's the best way of getting there - train or bus? Or is Cannes worth a visit (an easy train ride I understand too)

Villefranche and Eze are both easy on the train from Monaco.

I think you can then get a bus up the hill at Eze, although the climb itself is fantastic and probably more enjoyable at this time of year than the height of summer. It's well sign posted if you decide to do it. But wear sensible shoes and take water! I'll see if I can find a photo.

Cannes is lovely but I personally wouldn't go if I was only in Nice for a couple of days.

Keep an eye on your pockets though - my BIL had his wallet stolen on the train between Nice and Monaco. Loved Nice - so many places to eat!
