Travel insurance advice at 32 weeks pregnant

lydiangel83 · 01/08/2017 14:50

Hi all

I shelled out extra for travel insurance to cover me whilst pregnant earlier in the year, but have just discovered that they will not cover me beyond 32 weeks and I need to fly to Italy for a family wedding where I will be 32 weeks.

Does anyone have any recommendations for beyond this point? I know E111 will cover the medical costs but may not cover all of them and would not cover any additional costs involved e.g. hotels etc.

All suggestions welcome! Obviously will get fit to fly letter from doctor.

Thanks in advance :)

Don't even think about it if you cant get solid cover.

Ehic is only for the treatment the locals get. Have an accident ( possible pregnant or not) and you could be looking at tens of thousands medevac. Any kind of problem stopping you flying and you either come back overland or are stuck there until you and the baby are fit.

You don't need to take that flight, you want to. Regrettably you may be disappointed.

I doubt your airline will even allow you to fly that late on.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 01/08/2017 18:07

I think you are going to have to decline their invitation as the airline are unlikely to be able to accept you for travel.

E111 is very basic and not at all sufficient in terms of covering medical costs for and in pregnancy. Cover from insurance companies for you to fly may well be prohibitively expensive.

Brummiegirl15 · 01/08/2017 19:52

Do not even think about it. If you get a fit to fly note from your doctor you can fly up to 36 weeks I believe.

But don't even step foot on a plane without travel insurance for being pregnant. And no, your E111 form will not do. Aside from the fact that if you go in to labour, and give birth prematurely (which could happen, I had a premature baby) E111 would only cover you, not your baby. So who would pay for the care of your baby, accommodation for you whilst your baby is cared for? Repatriation of your baby?

If you can get insurance (and you might be able to, even if your current company won't) and you get the fit to fly note, then go and enjoy.

But no insurance.. not in a million years

As an aside the form went out years back. It is an ehic card, it is free and it is not travel insurance.

In case anyone is interested I think Ravenhall will provide cover x

Hi
Did you end up finding cover? I might need to fly to South Africa on a family emergency and I'll be 33 to 35 weeks pregnant...
thanks

buzzbeebee · 27/08/2017 23:23

I travelled up until 34 weeks and when I contacted my annual travel insurance to tell them they just said thanks for letting us know but the pregnancy and should baby arrive is just an extension of you so is covered. I also just got fit to fly letter from midwife to cover me at the airports should anyone have asked.

buzzbeebee · 27/08/2017 23:25

Oh I was with coverwise (just got it from go compare or one of the others)

Orangebird69 · 27/08/2017 23:29

Omfg. Drama llamas. I flew many times mid/long haul up to and including 36 weeks with no issues. It's only Italy, not the Australian outback! OP, if you're having a trouble free pregnancy, you'll be fine to fly. Just check if your airline requires a fit to fly note.

sycamore54321 · 27/08/2017 23:44

@Orangebird69 that's terrible advice. Yes the OP would probably be ok but there is a very high risk that something could go wrong and if it does, it will be expensive and complex. Insurance companies are out to make money, they love collecting premiums and they pay a lot of very intelligent people to price risk so that they can sell policies. For them to refuse cover is quite rare and a really big signal that what you are doing might not be a good idea. As well hospital costs for the OP and her baby if required, what about hotel costs for a support person for the OP? A medical repatriation flight? If the baby remains a NICU patient and OP is discharged with nowhere to stay? Liaison with a British hospital if necessary on discharge? And even disregarding the costs, an instance company will have an international team of experts to organise all that in the local language. Travelling without insurance in a high risk situation is extremely unwise, it could easily be ruinously expensive, massively comokex administratively and hugely stressful.

OP if I were you, I'd ring every company and broker I could and see if you can get someone to cover you. It may be a very pricey premium but that's the only sane way to travel. The cost-benefit balance of attending a wedding, however close the relationship, just isn't worth it.
Best of luck.

So glad I found this thread, I'm just to travel at 33 weeks to Portugal, low risk pregnancy and midwife/GP more than happy I travel, just one issue.... TRAVEL INSURANCE!

I've spent hours searching and unable to find anything until this thread!
