Off on holiday there in a few weeks - haven't been in about 20 years!
Is it better to change up money out there?
And what is the tourist tax and approximately, how many Euro's do I need to have ready to pay when we check in?
Many thanks, MW x

Flying out on Saturday security and passport control were absolutely fine.
Arriving a week earlier the queue to passport control was huge, humongous, I was about to suggest we sit down for lunch rather than join it, but in the end we did and it did move quickly to be fair. We were through in ?15 minutes or so. Not too bad.

Can't help on the queues (though worth remembering I've never queued for less than an hour flying long haul so maybe we all need to reset expectations) but just to say that I love cala d'or. It's pretty touristy but also really fun. If you can do go down to the port for dinner, there's lots of lovely restaurants and they are child friendly.

I'm not sure if you've got time but I use the post office card overseas and it works really well.

So far (from my son travelling back this morning from Palma) all I've had is a moan about why are we at the airport 4 hours before our flight?
I'll keep you posted!

OBface · 03/08/2017 11:43

Noofly you are brilliant! All advice noted. Your description of Soller sounds just what we're after in a holiday Smile

We're not bothering with a car so if you do have an email address for a taxi driver it'd be really helpful.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/08/2017 11:46

has anyone be caught in the 'hell' of passport control at Palma? Is it really as bad as the papers are suggesting?

I was there 3 weeks ago on the weekend the story broke about 2 hour queues for passport control. We panicked a bit but when we got to the airport there was a 10 minute max wait at passports and no queues at all at security.

ThursdayNextIsMyHero · 03/08/2017 13:14

We're going there next week and have been wondering about fast track through security. The webpage says if you are travelling with children you get preferential, free access to family Security checkpoints. Is it still worth paying for the fast track, or is the free, family one okay (or is it age limited? Dc between 5-10)?

Only half hour check in at Palma this morning no queues to return to Gatwick.

Noofly · 03/08/2017 15:59

OBface The taxi driver's email address is [email protected]. He is French and speaks quite good English. If you use him you can say the crazy American who had him drive us to the Palma Hippodrome one morning recommended him. Grin His son also took DS and me to Cuber early the next morning.

I hauled DS out of bed at 5:00 this morning to go do the Torrent de Pareis. Fantastic 5 hour scramble and mostly in the shade if done early enough. Our last day is tomorrow. Boo.

Oh, and the ice cream, drinks, snacks place down at the Port is something like Pont de Nuit. It's a laid back beachy place during the day/evening and nightclub at night. Wonderful smoothies/fruit juice drinks and seats in the shade.

Last two posts on Soller. Grin

Even in August if you are OK getting up and out by sunrise, the big walks are perfectly manageable - and we're having a 37C heatwave right now!

Torrent de Pareis photos- fantastic if you like a good scramble. I'd been a bit worried as most descriptions say it's hard, but if you are reasonably fit and have a good guide, it's really not that difficult.

One more Torrent de Pareis plus two from the top of the Puig de l'Ofre. No guide needed for this walk- well sign posted from Cuber then markers up the Puig then well sign posted down the Barranc to Biniraix (on the GR221).

Great photos Noo. Had to get up and out at 7 today and, yes, notably cooler and more able to do stuff until towards lunchtime.

Augustwashout · 05/08/2017 14:24

wow great pics, soller and port s are personal favs of mine and always have been .
My son and I went Coasteering last week with them and even though I hate jumping into water, Diego, our guide, even had me doing the 13m jumps. grin

that sounds amazing was it expensive? I wouldnt do it - but DD would LOVE IT.

I was hoping to go back in may 2018 but flights seemed so expensve

Noofly · 05/08/2017 17:37

August it was expensive- 60 euros per person, but everything was expensive this time with the crap exchange rate. We were out from 9:00-3:00. Drove to Deia then walked to the beach and along the coast a bit to the starting point so the actual Coasteering was from 10ish-2ish.

SwedishEdith yeah, yesterday was a scorcher in the afternoon! We chilled by the pool all day and then headed down to the Port for dinner.

Flew back today. We got to the airport 3 hours before our flight and there weren't any queues worth bothering about at security or passport control. The whole airport was incredibly crowded, though. Massive queues at Burger King/Subway etc. Our gate was changed three times including minutes before boarding (just vanished from the departure boards altogether!) with no info so an entire plane load of passengers were walking en mass trying to find the new gate. Grin Finally found the gate and took off about 45 min late.

HemanOrSheRa · 05/08/2017 17:46

Ah. I've revived an amazing thread about Mallorca. It MADE me book our sumber holiday there Grin.

I am looking for daytrip ideas. I think I've found them Smile.

PacificDogwod · 05/08/2017 22:07

Oh, wow, Noofly, that sounds amazing!
Wish we'd done that, but DH is really not good with heights.
I'd have to escape and do it on my own. Or with DS2 - he's mad, he is! Grin

Noofly · 07/08/2017 09:21

Yeah, same with us. DH hates heights. He also hates watching anyone else doing anything height related so it means it's me going along so DS can get his adrenaline fixes. I'll do most things so it works out. Grin
