Corfu holiday for family

Hello, we are looking at a week in Corfu. We are mum, dad and DD (5). We need all inclusive with a good pool, but want to be able to stroll into a town and have supper out and also a beach. We will hire a car, but want walking distance into somewhere with a few restaurants as we like a glass of wine.

What we don't want is any raucous nightlife, or hectic crazy holiday resorts like something from Benidorm. Want to feel safe walking around early evening with small child.

Any recommendations anyone? We usually Love St Eululia in Ibiza (probabaly spelt that incorrectly), but a change.

Thank you in advance.

We have been to Arillas on the North West coast. We liked it so much we went back the following year. DD was 7, then 8 when we went and it was ideal.

We don't do all inclusive so I have no idea whether they do any AI holidays there, but it does seem to tick all the other boxes for you.

We don't go AI either, so no idea if these place fit the bill...Arillas, as pp said, Ag Gordios, San Stefanos.

The Greeks really need tourist income and AI places aren't normally owned by Greeks. Just saying.

Ploppymoodypants · 27/07/2017 22:34

Yes I know. We do usually avoid AI, it's just that we can't afford to eat out all the time and I don't want a self catering or it's not like a holiday. perhaps we should just go to Ibiza again 😕

We prefer to self cater but don't really do much catering. We aren't big breakfast eaters. A slice or two of toast does for us, lunch is some local stuff bought from supermarkets - tomatoes, olives, bread, cheese etc and evening meal is eaten out. So this doesn't become too expensive.

I am a fan of AI, but not in Greece. Firstly because it's cheap and fabulous to eat out and secondly because unless you go really 5* they don't do AI well in Greece.

I think you can get a good B&B hotel or apartment and eat out for less than the price of AI unless you are very big drinkers.

Kalamaki is nice in Zante. Lots of lovely family resorts in Cephalonia.

When are you going? We are going to an all inc in sidari. It's only small and there is some nightlife but you can avoid that part of town easily. I will let you know what it's like after august if you want details of the hotel. It's the first time we will be going all in in this area.

"Firstly because it's cheap and fabulous to eat out and secondly because unless you go really 5* they don't do AI well in Greece"

And thirdly it is shit for the local economy.

We drove through Sidari en route to Arillas and I can safely say that Arillas is much nicer.

WandaOff · 28/07/2017 15:20

It is bad for the local economy. Thankfully it hasn't taken over in the Greek Islands I have been to in quite the same way as elsewhere, which means local restaurants still thrive (or as much as possible in the Greek economy).

Surely if you pay for AI and then wander into town to eat supper you're paying twice? I think I'd rather get some cereal/toast for breakfast, eat sarnies/salad for lunch and then eat dinner out - that would a) not be that much trouble and b) significantly cheaper than paying for AI in school holidays with dinners out in addition.

LoniceraJaponica · 28/07/2017 17:51

Exactly juneau. This is what we do.

The problem with AI is that the local restaurants close and there is no choice for holiday makers who don't want to go AI and eat shit food.

buckyou · 28/07/2017 20:28

It's really not very expensive to eat out in Greece..

LoniceraJaponica · 28/07/2017 20:43

And why would you go to AI in Greece to eat shit food when you can eat lovely Greek food that doesn't cost a fortune?

Makemineacabsauv · 28/07/2017 23:33

I do prefer sc in Greece but based on what you want look at the Mitsis Roda Beach in Roda on the north of Corfu. I would recommend walking along the beach into town (15mins but nice walk - take a torch for return or get s taxi) and Newport restaurant is the best (imo) for traditional Greek food.

I can't remember where it was in Corfu but we stayed at an AI for a week and it was awful!! (The food). But then if you went down the road you could get a lovely fresh meal by the harbour for about 10 euros!

We've been sailing in Greece a few times and literally never had a bad meal, in quite remote places or in Athens and everything in between.
