Cyprus - Really Worried Now!

We are off to Cyprus at the beginning of August. We have rented a private villa with pool but I'm really worried now. We do like hot as usually go to Greece or Southern Spain in August. When we booked I looked at average temps and most said average was 33c for Coral Bay. Now I have been reading it's more like 45c!! Has anyone else been in August and survived?

Well, there's not a lot you can do about it now. Keep hydrated, stay out of the sun during the hottest hours, lots of sun cream, etc. The DC & I went to Djerba in August 2011 & it was easily 40C. We survived. I loved it but the DC not so much.

ChesterFuckingDraws · 21/07/2017 00:23

Cyprus is lovely and is definitely survivable by being sensible. Drink plenty, lots of sun cream, time in the shade etc.
I was surprised how hot it was even at night, very humid too, and it took me a good few days to acclimatise to it.

Babykoala1 · 21/07/2017 12:18

I think they do the average temps by calculating the day and night temperature which is why it would appear lower than it actually is. 45 is definitely on the high end though! I went to Coral Bay in late July a couple of years ago and I think it stayed between mid and late thirties, not much different from Corfu last year. I'm sure you will be absolutely fine 😊

Dailystuck71 · 21/07/2017 14:04

We're not long back from Zante and it was 45 most days. Won't be doing it again but Spain has had a lot of high temps this year too. Back to October breaks for us. Just stay hydrated and in the shade. I missed going for a walk after lunch.

Hersetta427 · 21/07/2017 15:53

remember the temps they say as average are temps in she shade so in the sun the actual temp can be 10 degrees hotter so low 40's would be about right.

The last 2 August holidays we have had were Cyprus and Turkey. We managed fine but were sitting in the shade the whole time except when we were in the pool. The kids coped fine but we made sure they wore sun suits and hats the entire time as they were in the sun whilst in the pool for longer than us..

Teddy7878 · 21/07/2017 15:57

It was about 39 degrees when I was there and extremely humid (couldn't wear any makeup as it just sweated off instantly even in the evenings).
We still had fun but had to have the air con on full blast during the nights and made sure we sunbathed with an umbrella up to protect us a little

Icequeen01 · 21/07/2017 21:59

Thanks for your posts. Oh God, not only am I going to be sweltering but I'm going to have frizzy hair for 2 weeks and not be able to any wear make-up! 😀😀 Well I'm not sure we are going to be able to visit ruins etc during the day so pool or sea it is then! I'm sure we will still enjoy the rest and relaxation.

I went to Cyprus (it's just lovely) a few years ago in August - no DC at the time. I walked to some mosaic ruins outside paphos - maybe a 10-15 min walk. Halfway back there was a tiny kiosk selling cold water. I got two bottles; drank one and tipped the other straight over my head. It was so hot. Ridiculously so.

Lying by the pool the pages in my book kept falling out because the glue melted!!

Little movement during 11-3 is essential!!

Topseyt · 21/07/2017 22:08

We did it a couple of years ago. It was August 2014. Around 40 degrees each day.

Plenty of water, slather on the suburban and stay in the shade.

It was great. The sea and the pool were warm, no cold shock at all getting in at all.

Topseyt · 21/07/2017 22:09

Suburban is a ridiculous auto-correct for suncream.

sunnycloudyrainy · 21/07/2017 22:10

We went in August a few years ago, the heat was a bit much but we still had a good time. We were at a hotel with a little water park and spent most of the day there. My son did burn early on even tho he was wearing SPF50+!! So the all in one sun protection suits are a must.

We trekked to coral bay beach one day but only lasted about half an hour the sand was too hot to walk on. Maybe go in the evening.

Aphrodite water park is great, find a shady spot!!

DoneInn · 22/07/2017 09:51

Yes Cyprus is hot in August. I hope you have air con in your villa.
All you can really do in those temps is flop in the shade and swim. Sightseeing is just unpleasant.
Can I recommend my number one best buy this year this little beauty? Well actually it's quite ugly but was an absolute godsend on holiday.

Ragingbeeatch · 29/07/2017 13:28

I went in august last year, yes it was hot!! But we survived and had an amazing time. Don't even think about using anything less than factor 40 though! Me and my friend took our dds and we'd keep requesting buckets of ice to rub on ourselves ha. Have a fab one!

Icequeen01 · 10/08/2017 19:53

Well we are here and yes it is exceedingly hot! However, the villa is lovely and the pool a godsend. We are going to attempt a visit to Latchi tomorrow but will go early. Not sure why I bothered to bring make-up or my hairdryer as the heat/humidity just frizzes my hair and the make-up melts on my face 😀 Having said all that we are enjoying our holiday and the heat is making us sit and relax which is lovely. Hope you are not all getting too wet in the UK!

I agree that wearing make-up in those temperatures isn't a good idea. Not sure why you would want to for the pool/sea anyway.

I think sometimes the temperatures are exaggerated. We have just come back from Sicily where it was 37 degrees the last couple of days, but the UK press were saying it was 46 degrees.

LadyWithLapdog · 10/08/2017 21:11

I have visitors from Cyprus atm and they're complaining of the incessant rain. To top it up, tomorrow they're going to Manchester. Enjoy the sun, OP.

Icequeen01 · 11/08/2017 06:54

A little eye make-up for the evenings Lonicera, definitely don't bother for by the pool! 😀
I agree about the exaggeration of temperatures though. It was 39c here yesterday but I read on one of the weather sites it was 43c. Still flipping hot though!
