Best part to stay in for last minute mini break with DH? We won't be hiring a car and are on a bit of a budget. Is Jersey mega expensive for eating out? Thank you :)

Never been, always fancied it and must go when we move back to the UK. Let us know how it goes Madness

AuntieStella · 19/07/2017 19:16

Where did you choose? I think it's a great place for a holiday.

Eating out is a bit more expensive generally than UK, but there's plenty to choose from at all price ranges, so you should find somewhere younlike. What sort of food were you after?

thisismadness77 · 19/07/2017 19:45

Well thankfully my dad stumped up for the hotel as a birthday present as it was looking a bit pricy!! It's my 40th. :) staying at the Pomme d'or in Liberation Square in St Helier. Really handy location wise especially as we won't be hiring a car.
Foodwise... apparently they do a seafood buffet on the Friday. Other than that I'm thinking along the lines of Fish n chips and maybe Italian for the other two evenings, (nothing too expensive) and lunch on the go! The breakfast buffet looks like I won't want much by way of lunch. We Fancy the war museum, a bus tour, harbourside wine in the afternoon , a potter round, coffees, I can't wait.

Its a fabulous place. I went 14 years ago. I'd love to go back. We did hire a car but I am sure you can get around easily without.
Have a great time

SeamusMacDubh · 19/07/2017 19:48

Things to do wise, there was a pub crawl/map you could do, if you got all the stamps you got a t shirt I think. The beaches are lovely, there's the Durrell zoo and Jersey Pottery.

SeamusMacDubh · 19/07/2017 19:49

Also, we didn't hire a car, we used the buses and walked

thisismadness77 · 19/07/2017 19:52

Ooh the Durrell Zoo?! I'll look that up thank you xx

Scuse kisses I've had half a bottle of prosecco before dinner and forgot where I was....

The winery is nice too, as are both castles. The war tunnels are fascinating. There's a fabulous crab shack on the beach on the east side.

4yoniD · 19/07/2017 19:58

You can't go to Jersey and not go to the Zoo! Easy enough to get there by bus from St Helier, although it takes a little while.

AuntieStella · 19/07/2017 20:04

The bus station is almost opposite the Pomme d'Or, so dead easy to get the bus.

With only a weekend, don't try to do everything. I really like Gorey Castle (and there are nice places to eat (including al fresco) at Gorey Harbour. Elizabeth Castle (walk the causeway if tide permits, or get the Duck) is however walkable from your hotel.

The hotel you've chosen is a slice of Jersey history in itself - it's where Liberation was pronounced.

thisismadness77 · 19/07/2017 20:16

I'm pretty excited. My dad has been and said the German soldiers stayed there and names are on the wall. We are going wed to sat, I definitely want to relax and not be dashing about the whole time, (Dad is also having our 3 year old for three days while we go, what a Star!) but equally want to make the most of it. Great tips thank you!

It's a brilliant place to take small DC on holiday. So perhaps you'll just have to go more than once!

ememem84 · 19/07/2017 20:49

If you're after Italian food book cafe ristorante Italia in colomberie st helier. It's one of my favourites.

In the weighbridge square (to the left of the pomme d'or as you're standing outside it) there's a great Sri Lankan restaurant (called unawatuna). It's cheap ish. Food is delicious.

Visit the zoo. It's ace.

Try to get out to elizabeth castle if you can.

Walk out to st aubins too. 3 miles from at helier along the sea front. Lovely restaurants and a great french style deli for lunch (cheese pate bread cold meats and a glass of rosé! Yum).

I live in jersey. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

AuntieStella · 19/07/2017 20:53

There's a really nice beach cafe nearly at St Aubin (close to Lily Langtry's pile?) which does really good prawns.

ememem is Reg (and his garden) still going?

thisismadness77 · 19/07/2017 20:54

From what you have described I don't think I'll want to leave!

OP posts:
ememem84 · 19/07/2017 21:00

auntiestella I think so. I haven't been for ages. There was talk of him retiring and closing the garden. But I think it's open on special events now.

op opposite your hotel is a shopping arcade with some fast food chains (pasty presto, and a fish and chip place). Avoid the pasty place. Avoid all fast food places. We are so spoiled here for lovely restaurants. Enjoy them. If you want steak head to "wildfire" but book. It'll be packed. But best steak on the island.

If you can't get into thebitalian place try "la siesta" near it. It's A tapas place but it also does the most divine beef wellington.

if the weathers a bit meh go to the war tunnels. It's super interesting and tells you a lot about what people (real people like my grandparents) had to deal with during ww2 when the island was occupied by the nazi troops.

TeenAndTween · 19/07/2017 21:03

The zoo is lovely but don't expect elephants and tigers and giraffes. There are gorillas and lemurs and Andean bears and orang-utans and knowledgeable keeper talks.

Gorey castle is good.

The occupation tapestry (St Helier) is great imo and will tie in with the War tunnels which are moving and informative.

Food is pricier than it used to be and fewer cheap and cheerful places than 15 years ago. For lunches, good cheap café on the pier that has the maritime museum & occupation tapestry. The café at St Catherine's is good value too and you can have a good walk along the very long breakwater.

~4 weeks until we go back again. Smile

Oogle · 19/07/2017 21:04

Not stayed at that hotel but go to Jersey often. Plenty of buses to take you around the island and it's worth exploring.
I've heard good things about Quayside but not been.
Ormer is a Michelin restaurant in St Helier and they do a set lunch menu which is good value
Definitely visit St Brelades Bay - choice of restaurants there - crab shack, pizza express, oyster bay.
If you can, go to Portelet Bay. It's a trek down to the beach but so worth it.
The Tenby at St Aubin is a great pub and the menu is fab.

As an FYI, shops don't open on Sundays so if you're going to mooch around St Helier, do it on a Saturday!

Enjoy, it's my favourite place in the world.

ememem84 · 19/07/2017 21:34

Love how so many people love it here. ❤️

heron98 · 27/07/2017 15:43

DP and I went a few weeks ago - really enjoyed it. We didn't hire a car either but the buses are really good and we also hired bikes. There are marked out cycle routes around the island.

My favourite thing was the war tunnels museum, really enjoyed it. Preferred the north of the island to the south as it was a bit quieter. We stayed in St Helier but it seemed quite busy.
