Would it be good for a couple's break in November? We like food, drink, a bit of culture and sight-seeing. Would we fly direct or would it be Malaga? Thank you.

Yes it's a lovely city. You can fly direct to Seville airport. I did so from Gatwick. The Real Alcazar is a beautiful palace & is a must see. Seville is the home of tapas so you'll eat well too.

Whathaveilost · 17/07/2017 09:14

It's over 2 hours drive from Malaga to Seville but it's on Motorways so it's ok.
It's a lovely city and I would recommend it. I haven't been in November but I have been in December twice where it was warm in the day time but the evening drew in quickly.

corlan · 17/07/2017 09:19

There's an airport bus from Seville airport that takes you to the centre of town. It's a fantastic city - you should have a great time.
Here's a recent article from th Guardian about what to do and where to eat:- www.theguardian.com/travel/2017/apr/08/seville-city-guide-what-to-do-best-hotels-restaurants-bars

Oooh thanks for this, I'm adding to my watch list! We've just got back from Barcelona and I am now all Gaudi-ed out. OH has suggested Seville next, but what with work commitments and an upcoming operation I don't think we'll be going until end of November at the earliest. A trip abroad after recovering from op will help keep me motivated to do the physio!

LoniceraJaponica · 17/07/2017 09:29

It's a yes from me. The Alcazar was a revelation. I would even say that I preferred it to the Alhambra Palace in Granada. The cathedral is the largest in the world, and you must climb the Giralda Tower - just don't do it at midday because the bells are deafening.

You can fly direct to Seville.

SorrelSoup · 17/07/2017 11:26

Thanks everyone! Sounds very promising. Is there an area that's best to stay in to be in walking distance to bars etc.?

Depending on where you fly from, the choice of flights is likely to be much greater to Malaga than Seville. You can get the train from Malaga to Seville and it's quite quick and probably easier than driving as parking in Seville is expensive and in short supply.

You want to be in/near Barrio Santa Cruz to be in the thick of the action with all the narrow streets and bars, as well as the Alcazar, Giralda tower etc.

But expect it to be noisy at night as Seville is a very late night city which merges into day time - the bars were still going at 3/4 am when we went and then they were emptying the bins shortly afterwards noisily, Spaniards are incapable of doing anything quietly.

Thank you so much! Feeling gutted as none of the airlines travel on the dates we want, even with us willing to travel out of our way. Return flights returning at midnight when we have work Monday morning kind of thing. Any similar destinations? Warmish in November?

Rome?
Lisbon?

DuncanDonut · 17/07/2017 22:28

Barcelona!

LockedOutOfMN · 17/07/2017 22:30

Málaga, Granada, Jerez or Córdoba would all meet your needs if you can fly to any of them?

lynzmb · 17/07/2017 22:34

I second Lisbon, absolutely beautiful city with lots to see and do, and fantastic food/drink. We visited end of Jan/Feb 2016 and it was warm and sunny, upwards of 16 degrees during the day which was a glorious escape from the British winter. Chilly at night but not freezing. Not sure what Nov would be like. Happy planning, love a city break x

ShangriLaLaLa · 17/07/2017 22:35

We flew to Madrid and then took the fast train to Seville. Might that work for you with regard to dates?

LockedOutOfMN · 17/07/2017 22:43

ShangriLaLaLa 's idea to fly to Madrid and catch the AVE fast train directly to Sevilla is a good one. There's a bus that will take you from Madrid airport to Atocha station too; it's route number 200 and is 5€ (pay onboard the bus). You can also take a local train from Madrid airport to Atocha station.

If you wanted a night in Madrid at the end and or start of your holiday it would meet all of your needs except for the heat - unless you're very lucky it will be cold in Madrid by November although during the daytime it will be sunny. Sevilla will be considerably warmer.

mycatloveslego · 17/07/2017 22:44

If you want to see some authentic Flamenco dancing whilst you're in Seville check out La Carboneria. It's a bit tricky to find and quite rustic but an amazing experience!

SorrelSoup · 18/07/2017 08:02

Eeek! Just booked Seville! Had to be creative but I've done it! Will look back at these posts when I get chance later. Thank You! Any hotel recommendations?

It's lovely - we went there at Easter. As others have said, the Alcazar and Cathedral are lovely. Also the Plaza de Espana and the park it's in are well worth a visit.

We stayed at the Novotel which was near the football stadium - a 20 min walk into the centre or a short taxi ride. There are lots of more central hotels, but this was quiet in the evening which suited us. (Unless there's a football match on, presumably, in which case it might be noisier!)

elQuintoConyo · 19/07/2017 20:05

Seville is the mutt's nuts! Really easy to walk around, gorgeous place. The Alcazar palace is amazing. I got the electronic guide but it just droned on after a while and i ditched it to just mooch around. The gardens are huge and full of lovely sculptures. If you are into photography it is a fabulous place to snap. I have framed photos on my walls of tiles etc from there.

Triana is a neighbourhood acrossvthe watervwhich is rich in food, culture and flamenco Grin

If you fancy a day away, Cordoba is not far by train - 1 hour or so and fairly cheap, iirc.

Haven't been for 6 years, so can't remember hotels/restaurants i'm afraid.

We did conceive DS there, so my advice would be take condoms Grin

SealSong · 19/07/2017 20:20

Seville is amazing!

My top tips for getting the best out of the city are these -

  • Do things the Spanish way particularly in the evening if you want to get the true vibe of the city - go out and eat late in the evening, 9 pm onwards, and enjoy the bars until very late.
  • Embrace the siesta, even in November
  • Beware of pickpockets - use a cross body bag and dont carry wallets in pockets
  • The taxis are fine but make sure they put the meter on
  • Buy your tickets for the Real Alcazar in advance to save queuing. Do not miss visiting this place!

Oh I love Spanish cities. Seville along with Granada are my very favourites. Have a wonderful time!

AlpacaLypse · 20/07/2017 07:26

@SorrelSoup thanks!

Bamboofordinneragain · 26/07/2017 21:06

Cross over the river into Triana for a bit more of a real life piece of Seville. And be prepared to eat very late!
