Are there snakes in Lake Garda?

Shudder. It's very hot there at the moment, but if there are, even my big toe will not be going in the lake.

no there are not

I'm lying but you are as likely to see a snake there than on a walk in dorset moors

waitressinacocktailbar · 13/07/2017 17:17

I have been there many times and on a few occasions have seen what I thought was a snake. One popped up right next to my husband!

LIZS · 13/07/2017 17:18

No snakes but watch out for mozzies, we were bitten alive!

Frazzled2207 · 13/07/2017 17:45

No idea but I saw a very small (harmless) one in the south of france recently. If they have them they won't be the killer variety.

Twickerhun · 13/07/2017 17:47

I've seen snakes next to lake Garda, on the road. Not in the water tho.

dingit · 13/07/2017 17:59

Omg. One sighting is enough for me. Harmless are not. I'm sticking to the pool.
I'm armed with extra strong jungle formula, antihistamine pills and cream, the little mozzie bastards love my sweet blood.

Buy plugins for inside from local Co-op.

There are a few around water in Italy but they are generally pretty timid and not venomous (though I nearly had a heart attack when one started coming through our bathroom window whilst I was having a pee). There are also vipers (normally around long grass and dry places with a lot of rocks, eg in dry stone walls) but they are more common in mountain areas. Shudder.
I've lived in northern Italy and have only seen one or two vipers in almost 20 years. I'm sure you'll be fine

allegretto · 13/07/2017 18:23

I live in Italy and have never seen one. I know they're there but you probably won't see one. I certainly wouldn't avoid the lake - when we were in the south of France we used to see them round the pool! There ate probably just as many in the UK. You will see lizards though!

allegretto · 13/07/2017 18:24

*are not ate!

A quick Google tells me there are five types of snakes to be found in the area. Two are completely harmless, one bites but isn't poisonous and two are vipers.
If you're quiet and leave them in peace they won't bother you.

BUT just to make you feel better, I had a dog who was bitten by an Italian viper. She survived but was never the same again. From that day on I kept a viper venom antidote in the fridge. We were in the mountains (550m asl), though.

Dances it's just north of there. We plan to visit and go up Mnt Baldo. We have car.

There may be patches of snow on the top of M Baldo. Or at least there were when we went up at the start of June. You should take more than just sandals and a vest top.

Never seen a snake in Italy. (Fomo)

LIZS · 13/07/2017 18:49

We went to Torbole about 7 years ago. It was scorching hot with a sad lack of wind most days (dc were sailing and ds found it rather too tame). We visited Verona on our last day and it was in high 30s. Lakeside beaches were pleasant.

LIZS · 13/07/2017 18:52

Parking in Malcesine was a nightmare. Lakeside road on that side was gridlocked but less of an issue in Riva (nice waterfalls) and Limone.

dingit · 13/07/2017 18:57

We went up mnt Baldo when dd was about 8. She was sacred of the cable car, so we walked down - in flip flops Grin
I remember the grid locked Lake road. If we go anywhere it will be early. Never been to Verona, looking forward to that. Dh is looking forward to the Ferrari museum, and ds Garda land. We've hired a car as the individual cost of trips (4 adults) is £££££.

I'm an Aussie, seen many, many (many!) snakes over the years. I have never ever seen one in the water apart from a sea snake off Thailand whilst diving!

dingit · 13/07/2017 18:59

Dd loves alpacas. Don't remember them from last time. Feeling excited now.
