I just want somewhere that's not too crowded, awesome kids club for 9yr old
So I can sit by pool or beach
Somewhere nice to visit would be an extra
Europe, preferably 2hr flight, not 4 hours

I just want to relax on a sunbed with a book, while my son makes friends and has fun.
Why is it this hard?!
I'd be happy with self catering, but trailing round supermarket and carrying lots of bags in 35 degrees with my son is no fun.

Have you looked at the viva now zafrio hotels in majorica and menorca? We have younger kids but worth a look.
The majorica one is supposed to be quieter

Princessa yazia is fab. Never been in hols though. Might be more than £2k

VeuveLilies · 09/07/2017 16:34

Flights to Lanzarote don't really work 😰

That's a shame. The beach is lovely, white sand and calm shallow sea.

FromageRay · 09/07/2017 20:35

It's around 32 most days.

KeepSmiling83 · 09/07/2017 20:42

I agree with Princess Yaiza. We went in May half term and it was brilliant!

FromageRay · 09/07/2017 20:49

There was a heatwave just before we arrived, 40+ but it's settled down now.

FromageRay · 09/07/2017 20:50

And kids club is free - yay! They only charge for the under 3's

GavelRavel · 09/07/2017 20:58

I'm in Portugal at the moment with 3 kids at a place near Villamora booked last week on booking.com, very nice apartment and pool area, small development so not too busy at all. Apartment 1500 odd and flights (for 5) 700 odd so would be in budget and is 5 star. You could eat out most of the time with money saved to avoid too much shopping, though we popped to the supermarket to get basics and it was air-conditioned and empty.

GavelRavel · 09/07/2017 20:58

Also a free kids club.

shamoffour · 09/07/2017 21:00

Keepsmiling you might have been next to us at the pool. Mine still talk about kiko coming to breakfast!

KeepSmiling83 · 09/07/2017 22:14

Ah yes Shamoffour! They loved Kiko. We were in Block D (the family block) and it was brilliant!

VeuveLilies · 09/07/2017 22:16

What's it called Gavel? That link just takes me to booking.com

Oh hi Veuve I didn't put a link booking.com must have put it in the cheeky blighters! It's called the Residences at Victoria Villamora. Very nice, quite quiet but near Villamora marina for hustle and bustle. We've hired a car but you can get a free shuttle bus 15/20 mins to town and the beaches.

I can recommend this place: Hotel Pestana, Porto Santo .
We went last year with a 7 and 10yo, it was great. The pools are really lovely, the beach is gorgeous, and hotel is right on the beach. There's kids clubs (though we didn't use the clubs, we used their facilities, and they were fab, all the children in the clubs looked as though they were having a whale of a time), there's pool activities (aerobics, volleyball, water polo etc), but we didn't do stuff like that, we just lounged all week.
It's not too hot- 27-28 all year round. It's by Madeira, and part of Portugal, so flight is 3.5 hours, not 2, but transfer from airport is about 10 minutes (the island is tiny).
The Island safari by jeep was really interesting, visiting the basalt columns, the mini desert, botanical gardens, viewpoints at either end of the island, and an old-fashioned Hacienda/plantation type house.
It's all inclusive- the pool bar/snack place is really good quality food, the restaurants are shared with their sister hotel next door, and you can go between either to eat or for pool/bar etc. We're not big drinkers, but the cocktails were lovely!
You can get last minute, departing various airports, under £2k for 2 people, 1 adult, 1 child, no problem.

No-one has ever heard of it... but it really was a lovely holiday.

VeuveLilies · 10/07/2017 10:03

Redandgreen that looks perfect
Looks like there are only Tuesday flights so not good for this trip, but I'm going to look at going later on.
The Martinhal booking I had on hold didn't come off. They changed the price, I knew it couldn't be right. Im not paying £4K.

Was curious about Hotel Pestana so clicked on the link and read this extract from a TripAdvisor review on the page I clicked through to:

However if you are not up by 8am don't expect to get a sunbed buy the pool as they are all covered in towels . Also get used to queueing as every time you want a drink or use the restaurant you will be waiting a long time

Sounds like it might be quite crowded...

RedAndGreenPlaid · 10/07/2017 11:11

I don't know about sunbeds as our room was right by the pool, so we didn't use sunbeds all, just the patio (we don't sunbathe). It was busy, but not crowded, but it was August. They had entertainers whilst we waited to be seated, but never waited longer than 5 minutes. If you're booked for the a la carter restaurants, you're given a timeslot so no waiting.
I suppose it's like anything- if you're flexible or laid back, you'll cope, if you need things at set times everyday, you may find it more hard going.
It was very relaxed there, not noisy at night, there was entertainment but we don't bother with that. Beyond a couple of cocktails after supper, we played games as a family before bed.
