Eygpt in December

LilRedWG · 23/03/2007 16:56

We're thinking of going to Eygpt this December for our tenth wedding anniversary. Can anyone recommend a great beach hotel suitable for us and DD, who will be 18 months old.

TIA

been before in dec and needed jackets, probably spring like. the best one by far is the four seasons in sharm el sheikh, fantastic with children, there own hollywood style pool, food trucked daily from cairo in a refrigerated lorry.

Thanks.

Hello. Just to say we went to Egypt last October with DS who was 8 months. He wore nappies all the time, and it was 30 plus degrees, and he had no nappy rash. He had suffered a bit from it in the past too but was absolutely fine out there. It is a very dry heat.

ChaCha · 21/06/2007 22:42

I went to a resort on the Red Sea last year in September with DS1 who was about 8 months at the time. I bought nappies when I was there as we'd run out - no probs. I took those swimming nappies for days at the beach (bought here) and they were great.

Where in Egypt are you going? Sharm el Sheikh? Hurghada?

Let me know if i can be of any help, I'm half Egyptian and know the country and language pretty well.

Happy holidays!

We're staying at the Sofitel in Taba Heights, as recommended by Beety. I can't wait! DH is planning to dive and I'm planning on lots of playing in the pool/sea with DD, plus a trip to the Mount Sinai (minus DH & DD).

Any and all advise gratefully received! Thank you!

been to the Red sea resort twice, beautiful place, but my best friend was killed there 2 years ago in one of the bombs - couldn't go back now...

LilRedWG · 22/06/2007 09:04

Sorry to hear of your loss Smelly.

makadi.jazresorts.com/
We stayed at this hotel over Easter and had a nice break. I wouldn't choose Hurghada. Makadi Bay, where we stayed, is a bit further out. It felt very safe. There are some nice looking hotels there but I would only have chosen to stay in our one. It is Austrian run so there are quite a few German people staying there and animation etc tended to be in German. If you go there, I would choose all-inclusive because the buffet food (which is ok but not really 5 star) was a bit bland, the other restaurants in the hotel (pool restaurant, Italian restaurant etc) had nicer food I thought.

Other hotels in the area had a lot of Russian tourists, some nice looking apartments and gardens.

There is a spa right next door with reasonably priced nice treatments. I went there a lot.

Thanks SSSandy. We're staying at the Sofitel in Taba Heights, as recommended by Beety.

The Ritz Carlton is brilliant. Pay the extra and get yourself one of the rooms by the beach pool (I think they're called Executive rooms) where you get access to a club with free lunchtime food and drink.

SSSandy2 · 22/06/2007 09:25

oh sorry I missed that ! Have a great trip!

Sunshinemummy · 22/06/2007 09:26

Sorry should have read whole thread. Have a great time - it's a lovely place with lovely people.

SSSandy2 · 22/06/2007 09:27

I agree with sunshinemummy, the people in Egypt were just lovely, especially towards dd, they couldn't have been nicer

LilRedWG · 22/06/2007 09:28

Thanks guys. I can't wait. DD is very sociable and will LOVE the attention.

DS was only 9 weeks old when we went and they were just brilliant with him.

Egg · 22/06/2007 11:20

We stayed at Oberoi in Hurghada and was lovely (LilRed - know you have booked already, just defending it as someone said they wouldn't choose Hurghada).

I agree with what everyone has said. The Egyptian people (certainly the ones we met) were so lovely, our waiters would carry DS round with them while taking orders so we could eat our lunch and he didn't get bored, and DS loved every minute. They made such a fuss of him and made us feel very special. Ahhhh, getting all teary eyed now. We are going back in September.

SSSandy2 · 22/06/2007 11:27

I said I wouldn't choose Hurghada - for US, obviously a lot of other people do go there.

SSSandy2 · 22/06/2007 15:28

sorry Egg, just reread that and it sounds really snotty! Wasn't intended when I wrote, honestly

Egg · 22/06/2007 17:32

Ah don't worry! I was going to reply and say I hadn't meant to cause offence with my post anyway... It is lovely there, at the hotel we went to, but did not see the town (if there IS a town!), or any surrounding area as we never left the hotel .

milkchocolateStarryStarryNight · 22/06/2007 18:36

Egg, how can you defend Hurghada when you havent been there, dont even know if the town exists? You were at Oberoi. Any luxury hotel would be nice in any location. ( For example, I went to Mauritius and spent 10 lovely days at a luxury resort, if I hadnt also travelled around the island I would have said it was paradise, as it is, I have seen Mauritius and it truly is far from paradise.) I have been to Hurghada, I spent three weeks camping in Egypt, and had a break from the tent existence staying at a B&B in Hurghada for maybe £5 per night (lol) and I have seen the town. I have travelled a lot, Asia, the middle east and north africa, and Hurghada will probably come up trumps as the most dreadful place visited. Egyptian friendlyness takes on a different shade when outside the resorts, when poor people fight for your attention and will most likely have a letter in YOUR language (doesnt matter where you are from, it is there in his pocket for sure) that you just have to translate as the coincidence that he has a letter in YOUR language is so great, and do you have 5 egyptian bakhsheesh please.

Glad the OP is going to Taba! LOL!

Have fun climbing mt Sinai, it is fantastic! We started our ascent 2 am, we just got up for sunrise, it is one of the most memorable experiences ever! When you get to the top, it is most likely extremely crowded, with stalls and people selling hot chocolate and what not, but we stopped 15 minutes away from the top, strayed from the path a little, and saw the sunrise in solitude, magnificent! The mountains were coloured yellow, apricot, pink by the early morning sun.

Egg · 22/06/2007 19:16

Aha. Sorry, did not even think that the town might be awful. Was just thinking of our lovely hotel . Feel a bit foolish now...

LilRedWG · 25/06/2007 08:36

Don't feel Egg!

Beetie - have you booked your holiday yet?

JennaJ · 08/10/2007 14:39

Egypt is FAB!The people, the place, the food the shopping!!

We went in May (2 females and 5 children) and stayed at the Sofitel Karnack in Luxor..it was beautiful! You can easily buy nappies from the pharmacies..but as another poster said there are no big shops or supermarkets in Luxor so you do get really overcharged for everything!!
We are off to Cairo in 2 weeks, with 5 children under 8yrs and are 'going loco' staying in a small egyptian hostel in downtown cairo..going on the metro around town and eating local. I can't wait!!!
I haven't been to the red sea resorts but I have heard they are great, a bit more western than cairo and Luxor!

have fun when you go :-)

We went diving in the red sea in december and though lovely, it was quite cold underwater. I needed 2 thick wetsuits, so bear that in mind when packing!
